Oak Street closed to vehicle traffic next week

PORT ANGELES — The northernmost half of North Oak Street will be closed to all vehicle traffic starting the middle of next week, though pedestrians still will be able to access the sidewalk on the northbound lane.

Up until then, cars and trucks will be able to access the gravel parking lot of Pacific Rim Hobby, which is at the intersection of North Oak Street and West Railroad Avenue, via an alleyway off North Laurel Street, city Project Manager James Burke said Thursday.

The gravel parking lot will be inaccessible as Oak Street work progresses next week, though three parking spaces will be provided for Pacific Rim Hobby customers in the asphalt parking lot immediately south of the shop, said Nathan West, the city’s community and economic development director.

$16.7 million phase

The Oak Street construction is part of the $16.7 million first phase of the city’s combined sewer overflow, or CSO, project.

Oak Street will be completely closed in between West Railroad Avenue and East Front Street as crews with Ferndale-based IMCO Construction continue to install wastewater and stormwater lines underneath Oak Street.

“They have until March 15, but we are striving to get it done sooner,” Burke said.

The lines are part of the city’s efforts to increase wastewater and stormwater capacity between downtown Port Angeles and the city’s wastewater-treatment plant about a mile and a half to the east.
