North Olympic Peninsula tax procrastinators have a long drive ahead

Don’t procrastinate on your tax return this weekend or you’ll have a long drive ahead of you on Monday.

The only post offices that will stay open late for Monday’s federal income tax filing deadline are in downtown Olympia and three locations in Seattle.

Ironically, the reason more post offices don’t stay open late on the day everyone’s federal income taxes are due is money.

“They don’t give us enough extra hours. So people shouldn’t procrastinate,” said a Forks post office spokeswoman.

Post offices in the urban areas also have more employees to cover extra hours, she said.

Two extra filing days

Federal income tax returns must be postmarked by midnight April 15, but since that date fell on Saturday this year, the deadline has been extended to midnight Monday.

Post offices on the North Olympic Peninsula will operate on their regular schedules on Monday.

But if you’re really desperate, you can buy yourself a little more time by shipping your tax return.

Steve Deutermann, owner of The UPS Store in Sequim, said he can accept packages for a postmark acceptable to the IRS until 6:30 p.m.

The UPS Customer Center, 3216 E. U.S. Highway 101, Port Angeles, can accept packages for a postmark until 7 p.m. Monday, he said.

In Jefferson County, The UPS Store, 2023 E. Sims Way, Port Townsend, will accept packages until 6 p.m. Monday.

After that, people can take a prepaid package to the UPS distribution center next to Fat Smitty’s on south Discovery Bay until 7:30 p.m. Monday.
