North Olympic Land Trust fetes season at Lazy J Tree Farm

PORT ANGELES — A North Olympic Land Trust holiday celebration with sleigh rides, cider and cookies will celebrate the season and give visitors a chance to learn more about conservation.

The second annual celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Lazy J Tree Farm, 225 Gehrke Road.

The event is free and open to the public.

“It is a really casual get-together where we can enjoy each other’s company and learn about the land trust,” said Colleen Teevin, farmland conservation and development specialist for the land trust.

“We’ll have sleigh rides and Santa there,” she said, “but there is also an educational aspect where they can take a walk to Siebert Creek and learn a bit more about salmon habitat and what Lazy J is doing as far as that goes.”

Sleigh rides

Jim Bower’s Blue Mountain Belgium horses will give rides in the sleigh around the farm.

Santa Claus will be available for holiday wishes and photographs with personal cameras, Teevin said.

Naturalists Coleman Byrnes and James Karr will lead walks to the creek and talk about conservation easements and salmon habitat.

“Mostly, this is an excuse to get together and have cider and cookies,” Teevin said.

While enjoying the holiday spirit, those attending also may select and purchase a Christmas tree from the farm, as well as local fruits and vegetables, jam, wreaths and other products for gift-giving.

Established in 1990, the land trust has been instrumental in protecting 66 properties covering 2,059 acres across the Peninsula. The nonprofit trust manages some properties and directly owns others.
