PORT TOWNSEND — Nominations must be submitted by Wednesday (Aug. 31) for the 2011 Eleanor Stopps Environmental Leadership Award.
The award recognizes “citizens on the North Olympic Peninsula who are stewards of the environment and who have demonstrated leadership in efforts to protect the natural world.”
Criteria for the award includes:
— Led a successful resource conservation effort that benefits the North Olympic Peninsula and its residents directly.
–Acted as a community catalyst for programs, initiatives or ventures that demonstrate a commitment to the future of the earth and its biodiversity.
— Become a model for future leaders in business and education, or has been an exemplary citizen or policymaker who has implemented decisions that, though they may entail risks, have helped communities take the next step toward environmental sustainability.
Among her many environmental achievements, Stopps was responsible for the establishment of the Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The nomination form and supporting documents must be submitted by email or received in the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, 532 Battery Way, Port Townsend, WA 98368, before 5 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 31).
The award recipient and and runners-up are to be honored at a stewardship breakfast on Sept. 29 in The Commons at Fort Worden State Park.
Previous winners include Katharine Baril, former natural resource educator and planner, WSU Extension, 2005; Anne Murphy, executive director, Port Townsend Marine Science Center, 2006.
Other recipients are Tom Jay and Sara Mall Johani, artists and environmentalists, 2007; Al Latham, Jefferson County Conservation District ranger, 2008; Peter Bahls, Northwest Watershed Institute, 2009; and Sarah Spaeth, executive director, Jefferson Land Trust, 2010.
