JOYCE — No one was injured in a fire that left an Angel’s Lair Lane house a total loss, Clallam County Fire District 4 Chief Greg Waters said.
“This is a good reminder for everyone to get their chimney cleaned and inspected at least once a year,” he said.
Firefighters were called out about 1 p.m. Sunday to a structure fire in an approximately 2,600-square-foot single-story house that was home to 13 people on Angel’s Lair Lane, Waters said.
Due to the low morning temperatures, the family had started a fire in the fireplace that had been installed in 2021, he said. Later they noticed heat and smoke coming through the heating system registers.
The homeowner and an adult male went through the crawl space looking for the source of the fire, but it had spread through the entire attic and roof, Waters said.
“It was fully going when we got there, especially the roof,” he said. “As the roof continued to burn, we fought it internally until parts of the roof began collapsing. Then we evacuated and went defensive at that point.”
Firefighters were on scene until 5:30 p.m. dealing with the fire itself and then hours more for other matters, Waters said.
“It was excellent teamwork throughout the whole group,” he said. “All the family members were safe. One was checked for smoke inhalation and released. No pets were lost.
“The family has been hooked up with the Red Cross and are being looked after,” he said.
