No injuries reported in Port Angeles chimney fire

PORT ANGELES — No persons were injured in a residential chimney fire in the 800 block of E. 10th St. Friday morning.

Lt. Kevin Denton reported that firefighters received the call at 9:39 a.m. for a fire at 808 E. 10th St.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

No injuries were reported and fire officials were not sure whether the occupants will be staying in the home.

With smoke showing from the eaves and roof vents of the single-story house, firefighters from Engine 11 and Medic 11 discovered a fire in the wall above the home’s fireplace.

They opened up the interior wall and ceiling above the fireplace and extinguished a fire that Denton reported extended into the attic.

The fire was contained to the area around and above the fireplace, said Denton, but there was smoke throughout the home.

Fire officials said that a neighbor had earlier alerted the resident that embers were coming from the chimney. The resident had left for work after dousing chimney embers with a garden hose.

Mutual aid was provided by Clallam County Fire District #2, which stood by at the Port Angeles station with an engine and 3 personnel.

A total of 11 personnel responded to the scene.

Denton said the fire appears to have extended into the structure after creosote within the unlined chimney ignited.

There is no estimate at this time as to the dollar loss to the structure or the contents.
