NEWS BRIEFS: Volunteers sought for OlyCAP in Port Angeles … and other items

PORT ANGELES — OlyCAP’s Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is currently recruiting

volunteers to work in the Port Angeles School District.

Those interested must complete a volunteer application and background check. Both forms can be accessed online by visiting www.tinyurl.com/OlyCAP-forms.

Volunteers must also be at least 55 years old to qualify.

Volunteers in this position will work with students at an assigned district elementary school.

Additionally, a criminal history check and forms are required by the Port Angeles School District.

Training for the program is required and is ongoing, though organizers request that potential volunteers register at a time to attend volunteer orientation in September or October, according to a news release.

Orientation is held depending on the school site, according to the release.

Rockhounding talk

Garret Romaine is set to present “Rockhounding Around the Olympics” at all four North Olympic Library System (NOLS) branches Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Romaine will visit the Clallam Bay Library, 16990 state Highway 112 at noon; and Forks Library, 171 S. Forks Ave., at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, he will drop by the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. at noon; and Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 5 p.m.

The presentations are free and open to the public.

His presentation will explain the interesting geology of the Olympic Peninsula and how the regional structure has resulted in rockhounding opportunities including fossils, minerals, rocks and gold panning.

In addition, he will talk about his most recent book, “Geology Lab for Kids.”

Romaine has a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Oregon and a master’s degree in geography from the University of Washington.

Romaine has authored books about Pacific Northwest field collecting including “Gem Trails of Washington,” “Gem Trails of Oregon,” “Rockhounding Idaho,” and “Gold Panning the Pacific Northwest.”

Boating tours

NEAH BAY — The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration has set Saturday for two tours to honor U.S. veterans.

Reservations are required for both tours.

The free wildlife cruises are scheduled for the morning and afternoon.

Specifics including times, locations and supplies needed will be available at the time of registration.

The cruises are for those older than 13.

Port Angeles students earn letters

PORT ANGELES — Twenty Port Angeles High School students each received a varsity letter from United Way of Clallam.

The students are Abby Sanders, Addison Holland, Alisandra Baccus, Anthony Francis, Anton Kathol, Betty Cameron, Evian Schmitt, Glenn Deckard, Hailey Robinson and Henry Shaw.

Also, Hollund Bailey, Isabelle Cottam Jay Cunningham, Kiara Amundson, Kinnear Pierzchala, Madison Dunning, Makayla Peabody, Makena Merideth, Jasmine Cottam and Meiqi Liang.

They were honored during a May 24 Port Angeles School District board meeting award recognition ceremony.

The students earned their letter by volunteering a minimum of 145 hours in the community and on campus from April 1, 2017, to March 31 as part of United Way’s Youth United program.

Collectively the students completed 3,491 service hours in the community

Francis and Peabody — who received their letters last year — were awarded gold bars for this year’s community service.

United Way’s resource development manager, Hayley Pearce, made a presentation to the students with assistance from AmeriCorps members Jackie Scott and Natalie Andrus.

Students volunteered with area organizations including — but not limited to — Chamber of Commerce, Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, Boys & Girls Club, Kids Fest and Key Club.

Youth United was established at Port Angeles High School in 2012.
