NEWS BRIEFS: Volunteers sought for monitoring … and other items

SEQUIM — The Clallam Marine Resources Committee and Olympic Audubon Society are seeking volunteers to monitor pigeon guillemots along the coast from June through August.

The organizations will offer free training for those interested from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

The training will include the protocol to record bird attendance at their nest sites, noting the fish they deliver to their chicks and any disturbances such as eagle fly-overs.

After the training, volunteers will be assigned a location and monitor the spot for one hour — before 9 a.m. — one day a week.

The pigeons serve as an indicator species for nearshore health, according to a news release.
