NEWS BRIEFS: Voice Works Showcase starts tonight at 7:30 in Port Townsend … and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — Centrum’s Voice Works festival has the first of two showcase concerts at 7:30 p.m. today in the Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park, 200 Battery Way.

Pharis and Jason Romero, Sue Thompson and Don Share, Greg Blake, Skip Gorman and the duo Anna & Elizabeth will sing ballads from Appalachia and New England, bluegrass, cowboy songs and duets, according to a press release.

Tickets are $30 for general admission at Centrum.org. For more information, call 360-385-3102.

The second and final Voice Works showcase Friday night at the Wheeler Theater is sold out.

Restoration open

SEQUIM — Clallam County will host an open house regarding the lower Dungeness River floodplain restoration project from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, Sequim.

Located between the Dungeness Schoolhouse and the Dungeness Valley Creamery, the lower Dungeness River floodplain restoration project seeks to reconnect the river with about 110 acres in its floodplain. Restoring the lower Dungeness River has been a priority of the Dungeness River Management Team since the late 1990s.

Open house project staff will offer updates about the restoration project, including the alignment of Towne Road and trails that might be built as the project progresses.

Partners in the project include landowners, state, federal and local agencies, and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.

Polka Dot Dance

PORT TOWNSEND — The annual Honky Tonk Polka Dot Dance, part of Centrum’s Voice Works festival, brings the Caleb Klauder Country Band to the USO Building at Fort Worden State Park, 200 Battery Way, on Thursday.

The dance, featuring a variety of Voice Works faculty, starts at 8 p.m. Dancers are invited to wear polka-dotted outfits or accessories.

Tickets are $16 at the door only.

Immigration rally

PORT ANGELES — A “Families Belong Together” rally will gather at 11 a.m. Saturday on the U.S. Border Patrol building’s lawn and sidewalk.

The public is invited to come out and join the demonstration at the Border Patrol building, 110 S. Penn St.

Until 1 p.m., the group will join in a nationwide rally to “demand that our government stop separating children from their families,” according to a news release.

Sunrise student

SEQUIM — Sequim High School senior Abygail Mundy was selected as Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club’s Career Technical Education Student of the Month.

Mundy was recognized May 18.

She was joined by her parents, Logan and Melissa Mundy, as well as her video production teacher, Christy Ditlefsen, who nominated her.

Mundy plans to attend Peninsula College and pursue a career as a high school teacher.
