NEWS BRIEFS: Unity speaker to speak on Palm Sunday … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service guest speaker will be Kim Perkins.

Her lesson is titled “The Promise of Easter.”

Perkins is a business consultant, author and national speaker who recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Child care is available during the service.

Passover service

PORT TOWNSEND — The public is invited to attend Unity Spiritual Enrichment Center’s interfaith Passover and Easter Soul Journey service tonight at 7.

Rebbe Perry Spring, the Rev. Pam Douglas-Smith and the Rev. Simon Ruth de Viol will speak at the service held at the center, located at 3918 San Juan Ave.

Donations of $10 are suggested.

Those interested can bring fruit and unleavened foods for an oneg dessert potluck, which will follow the service.

Hebrew classes

PORT ANGELES — The Hebriac Assembly of Port Angeles will offer free Hebrew classes to the public starting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Otto Gershon will lead the classes, which will be held at 673 Strait View Drive.

The classes will be held every Thursday for about 12 weeks.

According to a news release, those interested can “learn Hebrew along with insights into the Jewish mind-set and culture.”

The textbook “The First Hebrew Primer, Third Edition” can be purchased online.

Overcomers group

PORT ANGELES — The Overcomers support group will meet 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday — until further notice — at Independent Bible Church.

The group, a faith-based recovery group authorized by Alcholics Anonymous, meets in the upper room of the church, located at 112 N. Lincoln St.

According to a news release, “our primary purpose is to help people recover from drug and alcohol addiction through the scripture in the Holy Bible. We believe anonymity and confidentiality are cornerstones to recovery.”

Good Friday service

PORT ANGELES — All are welcome to the Good Friday Taize service at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., tonight at 7.

The Great Vigil of Easter begins Saturday at 8 p.m. as the new fire is lit, “signifying the return of Christ’s light to the world.”

On Sunday at 10 a.m., the church will continue celebrating with music, Holy Eucharist, brunch and an egg hunt.

Easter services

PORT ANGELES — Dea Warford will speak at three Easter services held at Harbor of Hope Foursquare Church starting today.

The first service will occur at 7 tonight, the second at 6 p.m. Saturday and the third at 10 a.m. Sunday — all held at the church, located at 1018 W. 16th St.

Warford is a full-time evangelist from Los Angeles and has pastored for 15 years.

New program

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Discovery Lab has opened registration for its new Homeschool Enrichment Program.

The program will offer classes in language, arts, science, math, and logic.

This spring, the lab is offering two four-week sessions on Mondays and Fridays, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., from this Monday to Sunday, May 14, and from Monday, May 15, to Monday, June 12.

During the sessions, a one-hour break will allow children to explore the forests surrounding the lab.

Coffee with mayor

SEQUIM — The city will offer “Coffee with the Mayor” at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20.

The event will be held at the Bell Creek Bar & Grill, located at 707 E. Washington St.

The informal meeting is an opportunity for those who would like to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or community.

Police Chief Sherri Crain will join in at the meeting.

Volunteers sought

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Main Street Program is seeking volunteers to assist with its Earth Day spring cleanup activities from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 22.

Those interested are advised to meet at Adams Street Park, located on Water and Adams streets at 9 a.m.

There will be multiple groups who will weed, pick up litter and plant at several locations around the historic district.

Volunteers are asked to bring hand tools, gardening gloves and appropriate outside work clothing.

Rock club open house

SEQUIM — The Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association will hold its spring open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 22.

Featured at the event will be the opening of the association’s new lapidary classroom at the club’s facilities, located at 81 Hooker Road.

The classroom will provide space for teaching metal smithing, faceting, beading, chain maille, jewel tree making and wire wrapping.

During the event, club members will show attendees how to cut and polish stones, and instructors will explain the various classes offered by the club.

Those interested can sign up to receive a beaded cabochon necklace or a specimen of velvet malachite.

PA Garden awarded for its dahlias

PORT ANGELES — Jan’s Country Garden placed first in the 2017 Garden Watchdog Top Five category for suppliers of dahlias by Dave’s Garden.

The annual award is mainly for small, independently owned gardens.

The rankings are based on customer reviews for the past year.

“Tubers were well-protected and absolutely perfect. I’ve ordered tubers from a few well-respected sources, but these tubers were exceptional: immaculately clean and healthy, labeled, and with the eyes clearly visible and marked,” wrote an anonymous customer, according to a news release.

The garden will be closed April 20-22 as owner Jan Jones celebrates her 73rd birthday.
