NEWS BRIEFS: Tuna drive begins Wednesday in Port Angeles … and other items

The 23rd annual Community Tuna Fish Drive to benefit local food banks will be held from Wednesday until Monday, April 17.

Individuals, businesses, clubs, churches and organizations are invited to participate by donating cans of tuna fish.

Collection barrels will be at a number of Port Angeles locations including Safeway East, Safeway Lincoln, Mt. Pleasant IGS, First Federal branches and Port Angeles Food Bank.

The goal of this year’s Community Tuna Drive is to surpass last year’s total of 21,901 cans of tuna fish.

Tuna will also be accepted for any other food bank or food distribution program on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Crews gather trash from area roadways

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office’s chain gang recycled 128 pounds of aluminum for $32 and took chain gang transports 4 and 5 to Mobile Music to be fitted with security cameras Feb. 13-17.

Notable items found along roadways were nine needles, 23 tires, a vacuum, two coolers, a carpet, a stove, a boat motor, two stereos, a DVD player, an old car, a muffler, a satellite receiver, a range top, piano parts, a bathub, a pickup canopy, two chairs and a car grill.

Crew members found illegal dumpsites at Palo Alto, Port Williams and Mary Clark roads, totaling 3,000 pounds of garbage from the dumpsites.

Crew members also cleaned 16 miles of Palo Alto Road and 1,040 pounds of litter; 8 miles of Mary Clark Road and 340 pounds of litter; 2 miles of Port Williams Road and 300 pounds of litter; 5 miles of Chicken Coop Road and 700 pounds of litter; 3.5 miles of Whitcomb-Dimmel Road and 270 pounds of litter; 0.5 mile of Wilson Road and 80 pounds of litter, 4 miles of Bogachiel Way and 220 pounds of litter; and 4 miles of Calawah Way and 250 pounds of litter.

Crew members also put down gravel just past the Dan Kelly and Eden Valley roads intersection to firm up soft shoulders, repaired rock work in a ditch from snowplow damage, removed storm damage from the Olympic Discovery Trail from Crown Z Water Road to Kacee Way and Gregory Place, and filled potholes on Gasman Road and Agnew Parkway.

The chain gang has so far this year cleaned 130.5 miles of roadway, picked up 14,610 pounds of dumpsite litter, picked up 11,990 pounds of roadside litter, recycled 1,765 pounds of aluminum and removed or sprayed 510 scotch broom plants.

Whitworth honor roll

SPOKANE — Two North Olympic Peninsula students — Danielle Schimschal of Port Angeles and Christopher Pieper of Port Hadlock — have been named to the Whitworth University provost’s honor roll for the 2016 fall semester.

The students qualified for the academic honor society by maintaining a minimum grade-point average of 3.75 during the semester.

New finance director joins Jefferson PUD

JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County Public Utility District commissioners have chosen Susan Carter as their next finance director and chief financial officer (CFO) effective Monday, April 3.

Previously, Carter worked for Sawnee Electric Membership Cooperative, based in Alpharetta, Ga., for more than 30 years, her last position being director of accounting services.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from North Georgia College & State University and is currently enrolled in the “Rural Utilities Services Borrower Accounting Course.”

“I enjoyed my trip to Port Townsend earlier this month and look forward to serving the community as the PUD’s new CFO,” Carter said.
