NEWS BRIEFS: Tucker portrait winner at art show … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School senior Zoe Tucker has been announced as a winner of the 2018 Olympic Educational Service District 114’s Regional High School Art Show.

Tucker’s “Self Portrait” will advance to the state-level Superintendent’s High School Art Show at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction in the Old Capital Building, 600 Washington St. SE, in Olympia from March 30 through June 1.

Tucker’s artwork has also been selected by Central Washington University to receive a $2,000 scholarship award.

Other regional winners advancing to the state-level show are “Alcoholic Lizard” by Alexandra Bloomquist, South Kitsap High School; “Saliva” by Alan Conassi, South Kitsap; and “Fluid Motion Series – Offering Set” by Sydney Johnson, North Mason High School.

Also, “It’s Raining” by Madison Martel, Central Kitsap High School; “Staining the Green One Red” by Gianni Nguyen, Kingston High School; “Alluring Depths” by Gianni Nguyen, Kingston.

Biehl, Johnson, Nguyen and Russell received $1,000 scholarships from CWU.

The People’s Choice Winner was “Masquerade” by Hope Clark, Central Kitsap High School.

The people’s winner is determined by ballots cast by visitors to the High School Art Show exhibit at Olympic ESD.

An awards reception will be held on Monday, March 5 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the service district 114 office, National Avenue N., Bremerton.

The public is invited to the reception.

The 45th annual Superintendent’s High School Art Show is sponsored by the office of superintendent and service district 114.

Play tryouts

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Community Players will hold tryouts for their upcoming production of“Lend Me A Tenor” on Wednesday and Thursday, March 7 and 8.

Tryouts will be held at the player’s playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. both days.

Directors Mark and Dani Lorentzen are looking for four men and four women comedic actors withcharacter age range from late 20’s and older. Two characters speak with stylized Italian accents.

Singing is not required but is a plus, event organizers said.

Tryouts will consist of reading from the script, which is available to read at the Port Angeles and Sequimlibraries.

“Lend Me A Tenor,” by Ken Ludwig is the winner of three Tony awards, It is a comedy set in 1934 at theCleveland Grand Opera where they are primed to welcome world famous Tito Merelli, the greatest tenor ofhis generation to appear for one night only as Otello,” according to a news release.

The play will run April 27 through May 13 on Friday, Saturday and Tuesday nights and Sunday afternoons.

Evening rehearsals are slated to begin at an unspecified date in mid-March.

Hospice training series

CARLSBORG — Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County will offer a Community Education and VolunteerTraining series beginning Friday.

The course will run six consecutive Fridays through April 20, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at ClallamCounty Public Utilities District, 104 Hooker Road.

The sessions are free and open to the public.

The series provides a history and overview of hospice and its philosophy, explores attitudes towards deathand dying, delves into the grieving process and self-care, and offers hospice volunteer training for thoseinterested in volunteering with the organization. Training for foster parents Wednesday

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Department of Social & Health Services Office will offer a foster parentCaregiver Core Training at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Those interested in enrolling in the free training at the office, 201 W. First St., must complete anorientation prior to attending the class. To take the orientation, visit fortress.wa.gov.

While the orientation can be completed online, program coordinators encourage those interested to enrollin an in-person class. For more information, call Karen Branyan at 360-912-3070.

The orientation is designed to help guide participants through the licensing process and provide a briefoverview on what foster parenting is all about.

During the course, attendees can meet other prospective foster parents and a licensor will be available toanswer questions.

The licensor will discuss the minimum licensing requirements and help with required paperwork.

Licensing application packets will be provided.
