NEWS BRIEFS — Traffic delays expected into mid-July on West Twin Road in Forks . . . and other items

FORKS — Drivers on West Twin Road can expect delays of up to 30 minutes while the Pacific Ranger District performs road maintenance until mid-July.

When conditions permit, the road, which is Forest Service Road 30, will be closed for a three-day window for paving.

Artist to speak

SEQUIM — Watercolor artist Gary Griswold will present a program about watercolor art at the Sequim Arts meeting at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave., on Thursday.

The meeting starts with refreshments at 9:30 a.m., with a business meeting at 10 a.m.

Griswold’s presentation will follow at about 10:45 a.m.

Griswold is a local artist from Port Hadlock and has been painting watercolors of the Northwest for more than 30 years.

He attended art school in the Los Angeles area for four years, studying at the San Francisco Art Institute, Los Angeles City College and University of California.

He is stimulated by the wind, temperature and smells of the outdoors, and attempts to capture the sense of these elements in his paintings.

Griswold is art director of the Port Townsend Aero Museum.

Sequim Arts welcomes everyone, including non-artists, to attend its free meetings.

Broom Busters II

SEQUIM — The next Broom Busters II event is from 9 a.m. to noon today.

Participants will meet at Carlsborg Road and the Olympic Discovery Trail.

They will head westward, stopping to take care of scotch broom at Gasman Road and aiming to get to Lark Farm Road.

The last “broom busting” day is Wednesday, May 28.

Broom Busters II is one of many River Center Rally teams that raise funds during the month of May to support the educational programs of the Dungeness River Audubon Center and Railroad Bridge Park.

Their goal is to make it to Morris Creek to clear out scotch broom along the Olympic Discovery Trail.

Fundraising event

PORT TOWNSEND — Friends, family and the public are invited to a fundraising event for Carl Levine, who lost his timber-frame home and belongings in a fire last month.

The event will be held at the Highway 20 Road House, 2152 W. Sims Way, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

All are welcome. A $10 donation is suggested.

Levine said he was renting the uninsured home to finance his attendance at a Seattle college.

Open garden set

PORT LUDLOW — An open garden will be held at Chimacum Woods, 2722 Thorndyke Road, during Memorial Day weekend Saturday through Monday.

Tours of the woodland garden, blooms, rhododendrons and more are on tap.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

Volunteers needed

FORKS — The Red Cross will host a volunteer meeting at the Forks Library, 171 S. Forks Ave., at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 3.

The organization is seeking new volunteers to train and be available for emergencies in the West End.

Free hiking club seeks applicants

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula YMCA’s Summit Seekers hiking club is offering free hikes that are open to anyone.

Hikes are usually completed in four hours and start at 8 a.m.

Registration is required and can be completed in person at the YMCA, 302 S. Francis St.; by email at lola@olympicpeninsulaymca.org; or online at www.clallamcountyymca.org.

Transportation to each trailhead is provided for the first eight registered hikers. Additional participants and anyone wanting to take his or her own car will caravan to the trailhead.

■ May 30: Little River Trail.

■ June 13: Mount Storm King.

■ July 11: Hurricane Hill (no transportation provided for this hike).

■ Aug. 29: Pyramid Peak Trail.

■ Sept. 12: Mount Angeles to Switchback Trail.

■ Oct. 10: Slab Camp Creek Trail to Gray Wolf River.

Nonprofit gets $2,000 in donations

PORT ANGELES — A recent Ministries Assisting Neighbors in Need with Agape, or MANNA, luncheon was held to thank contributing congregations and organizations.

A check for $2,000 was presented to MANNA, a local nonprofit organization that provides financial aid to Port Angeles-area residents in need of temporary assistance.

Funds came from the recent fourth annual Jammin’ for Justice fundraiser, sponsored by the Advocacy in Action Team at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Jammin’ for Justice is a musical concert followed by refreshments and a silent and live auction.

This year, after expenses, $6,000 was divided equally between MANNA, Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics and the Faith Action Network.

Bachelor’s degree

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Madelyn Macleery of Port Angeles earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in psychology during a recent commencement ceremony at Charleston Southern University in the North Charleston Coliseum.
