NEWS BRIEFS — Taste of Port Townsend on menu tonight (Thursday) . . . and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — Nine restaurants will offer tastes of their menus during an evening on the town from 4 to 7:30 tonight.

Tickets for Taste of Port Townsend are $30 for adults and $20 for children.

They can be purchased at the Safeway on Sims Way, Quimper Sound at 211 Taylor St. or the Food Co-op.

Participating restaurants and menus are:

■ The Food Co-op, 414 Kearney St. — Emerald greens, edamame and corn salad.

■ The Belmont Restaurant, 925 Water St. — Hibachi beef.

■ Jordini’s, 929 Water St. — Mini sandwiches, lobster chowder and bread pudding with caramel sauce.

■ The Tin Brick, 232 Taylor St. — Wood-fired pizza.

■ Silverwater Cafe, 237 Taylor St. — Smoked prawn crostino, Red Dog Farms arugula pesto and citrus fromage blanc.

■ Khu Larb Thai, 225 Adams St. — Vegetarian curry basil noodles, tamarind chicken and “Sai Oui.”

■ Sirens Seafood Bar, 823 Water St. — Shipwrecked oysters, Puget Sound boil (21-and-older only).

■ The Boiler Room, 711 Water St. — Cookies, coffee and chai.

■ Elevated Ice Cream & Candy Co., 631 Water St. — Chocolates and fudges.

‘Berry Basics’ set

PORT ANGELES — Veteran WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will present an introduction to growing berries at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., at noon today (Thursday).

Gardeners will learn the growth requirements for strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries.

During “Berry Basics,” Stehr-Green will discuss the general types of berries, the requirements for a supportive berry-growing site, the care that each berry type needs and educational resources for growing them.

Attendees may bring a lunch.

The presentations are free and open to the public; however, donations to help offset copying costs for handouts are accepted.

This presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Garden Tips” brown-bag series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, held the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles.

Boating safety course set Saturday

PORT ANGELES — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 42 Sequim-Port Angeles, will sponsor a boating safety class Saturday.

“About Boating Safety” will be held at the Coast Guard base on Ediz Hook at 9 a.m.

This class will qualify attendees for a state boater education card, which is required for all boaters 55 and younger.

The cost is $15 per person or $20 for a couple.

Auditions slated

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts will hold auditions for Neil Simon’s “The Good Doctor,” the first production of the 2014-15 season, at the theater, 414 N. Sequim Ave., at 11 a.m. Saturday and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

There are roles for three men and two women.

The shows will be performed Sept. 5-21.

This play is Simon’s homage to Anton Chekov. It comprises 11 one-act comedic and satirical sketches.

Nine are based on stories Chekov wrote to pay his way through medical school; two are originals written in the style of Chekov by Simon.

Sea star survey

PORT ANGELES — A citizen science sea star survey will take place at the Freshwater Bay County Park boat ramp, 300 Freshwater Bay Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Participants will collect data on sea stars to determine the prevalence of sea star wasting disease.

Wear layers and boots that can get wet and muddy.

There is no cost to participate in the survey.
