NEWS BRIEFS: Stand Down in Forks offered this Thursday . . . and other items

FORKS — Goods and services will be provided at the annual Voices for Veterans Stand Down in Forks on Thursday.

The stand down will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Forks Elks Lodge, 941 Merchants Road.

The event is open to all who have served in the military, including the Merchant Marines, Coast Guard, Marines, Army, Navy and Air Force, and their immediate dependent families.

Free hot breakfast and lunch, employment services, information on veteran benefits, housing assistance, legal aid and free medical and dental screenings are planned.

Free clothing, hygiene kits, bedding and outdoor equipment also will be provided.

Free transportation to the event will be offered by Clallam and Jefferson transits. Riders only need to identify themselves as veterans to receive a day pass.

Sarge’s Place will transport bus riders from the transit center to the Forks Elks Lodge.

PT art exhibit set to open this Thursday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., will display the artwork of Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry and Larkin Van Horn from Thursday through May 29, with an opening reception from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and “The Art Talk” at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Exhibit hours will be from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays.

Fallert-Gentry is an internationally recognized artist.

Her honors include 100 Best Quilts of the 20th Century, the Silver Star Award and she has been selected as one of the 30 most influential quiltmakers in the world, according to a news release.

Van Horn uses mixed-media 3-D structures and wearable art.

He is a member of the Northwest Designer Craftsmen, Studio Art Quilt Associates, Surface Design Association and the Whidbey Island Surface Design.

TAFY plant sale

PORT ANGELES — The Answer For Youth (TAFY) will hold a plant sale at the old Hartnagel’s Building, 833 E. Front St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

There will be plants and flowers planted by Wayne Roedell in locally made cedar boxes.

TAFY is a drop-in center for homeless and at-risk youths.

Clean Sweep

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Downtown Association will have its 23rd annual Downtown Clean Sweep from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers can meet at the Conrad Dyar Memorial Fountain on First and Laurel streets beginning at 9 a.m. to receive their job assignments.

Volunteers will weed, sweep and pick up litter throughout the public areas of downtown.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring brooms, shovels and gloves.
