NEWS BRIEFS: Special meeting today between Port Angeles city, port … and other items

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles City Council and Port of Port Angeles commissioners will consider an interlocal agreement and hear an update on an avigation easement when they meet at 2 p.m. today.

The special joint meeting will be in council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

Parking lot work

PORT ANGELES — The Dupar parking lot between West First Street, Front Street and Oak Street will be re-striped Saturday, according to the Port Angeles Downtown Association.

The lot, which is behind the Department of Social and Health Services building at 201 W. First St., will be barricaded Friday night to prohibit vehicles from parking overnight and disrupting the early morning work, PADA said.

Unity speaker set Sunday

PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service speaker will be the Rev. Donna Little.

Her lesson at the church, 2917 E. Myrtle St., is titled “Peace in the Midst.”

According to a news release: “Times of great change challenge us to find our center in the midst of seeming chaos. The spiritual practice of finding peace right where you are, in the midst of any situation, has been the prescription of master teachers through the ages.”

Little is a resident of Sequim and is a licensed and ordained Unity minister.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Child care is available during the service.

Concert rehearsals

PORT ANGELES — The Interfaith Community of Clallam County will continue rehearsals for a Saturday, Sept. 23, concert and community sing at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to attend the rehearsal at Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Barr Road.

Singing experience is not a requirement to participate.

One-man portrayal

SEQIUM — Faith Lutheran Church, 382 W. Cedar St., will host Allan Lemke for a performance titled “Martin: A Life of Martin Luther” at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The one-man rendition is written by Lemke, which recounts the life of Martin Luther and includes a retelling of the Gospel.

Lemke graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in dramatic art.

Catholic classes

PORT ANGELES — The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults will begin to offer free classes about the faith of the Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday.

The classes will be held Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. through Easter at Queen of Angels’ Parish Hall, St. Benedict Room, 209 W. 11th St.

Those seeking the completion of the sacrament of confirmation are also invited to attend.

Refreshments will be served.

Registration is preferred.

PT coffee talk

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Main Street Program will host a fall merchant coffee talk titled “Major Projects in Port Townsend” from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Those interested in attending must make reservations before Monday. They can be placed by emailing admin@mainstreet.org or calling the program’s office at 360-385-7911.

Heather Dudley Nollette, a managing member of Hastings Development LLC, will provide an update about the Hasting Building Project and be available for a Q&A session in the Cotton Building, 607 Water St.

The cost is $5 for Main Street members and $7 for nonmembers.

Laura Parsons, civil engineer for the city, will present an update about the 2018 Water Street Enhancement Program slated for January-June 2018.

At the end of the meeting, Port Townsend Police Officer Wendy Davis will provide a parking report.

Coastal cleanup

PORT TOWNSEND — Members of the public are invited to a beach cleanup effort Saturday, Sept. 16.

Volunteers will register at 9 a.m. at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center’s Natural History Exhibit, 532 Battery Way in Fort Worden State Park.

Registration can also be completed online by visiting www.coastsavers.org.

Following registration, volunteers will fan out to clean beaches at Fort Worden, Fort Townsend and Fort Flagler state parks and Chetzemoka and North Beach parks until 1 p.m.

Outer coast beach cleanups will end later, due to distance.

Marine center volunteers will be on hand to assist with sign-in, directions, beach locations, trash weighing and recycling, as well as to help document the amount of debris collected.

The program is sponsored by the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and works in conjunction with the annual International Coastal Cleanup initiative.

Landscaping classes

SEQUIM — The Clallam Conservation District is accepting registration for its fall natural landscaping course.

Registration and a $25 payment are due Friday, Sept. 29. For couples, the registration cost is $30. To register, call 360-775-3747, ext. 5.

The cost includes the book “Grow Your Own Native Landscape,” a binder of reference material and facility rental.

The interactive course on sustainable landscaping includes three Tuesday evening classes and three Saturday field trips beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

Participants will learn how to analyze the unique ecological conditions of their properties and develop appropriate landscape designs through a naturalistic landscape style, with special emphasis on water conservation and minimal maintenance.

Participants will be coached through the steps necessary to prepare plans that lead to landscapes that save time and money while also enhancing wildlife habitat and biodiversity, according to a news release.

The course is based on the basic permaculture principle of understanding and working with nature.
