NEWS BRIEFS: Some fire limits lifted … and other items

Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest lifted their fire restrictions Monday, according to a press release from the National Park Service.

The move is due to significant and widespread rain with a resulting decrease in fire danger.

The restrictions included a ban on campfires outside of developed campgrounds. Fire restrictions are typically lifted when a significant amount of precipitation is recorded in local weather stations and the fire danger has decreased dramatically.

Rainfall since Sunday on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula is more than an inch, with amounts of 0.20 inches or more on the east side.

Fire restrictions were implemented Sept. 1 this year due to a warm, dry summer and moderate drought conditions across the forest and park, according to the press release.

Elevated burn bans remain in place elsewhere in Clallam and Jefferson counties.
