SEQUIM — The North Olympic Women on the Water benefit dinner/dance and silent auction, which was scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.

It will be rescheduled for a later date.

Chain gang busy

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang cleaned 9 miles of Old Olympic Highway from Lewis Road to Carlsborg Road and picked up 540 pounds of litter during the week of Jan. 9-13.

The crew also recycled 522 pounds of aluminum worth $114.84 and sorted supplies in the basement of the Elwha Justice Center.

Crew members found an illegal dumpsite at Kirner Pit, totaling 980 pounds of garbage from the dumpsite.

Crew members also pulled scotch broom plants on Laird Road and Kirner pit, totaling 510 plants pulled.

From Jan. 16-20, the chain gang cleaned 9 miles of Hoko-Ozette Road and 5 miles of Mt. Pleasant Road, totaling 1,800 pounds of litter. Notable items found along roadways were a knife, mattress, TV, treadmill, bumper, chair, propane tank and five tires.

Crew members also removed storm debris from Joyce-Piedmont and Hoko-Ozette roads. Crew members also dug a ditch on Dan Kelly Road from the Eden Valley intersection to divert water from roadways.

The chain gang has so far this year cleaned 23 miles of roadway, picked up 3,840 pounds of dumpsite litter, picked up 2,340 pounds of litter, recycled 1,129 pounds of aluminum and removed or sprayed 510 scotch broom plants.

PLU scholarship

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles High School student has recently been awarded a scholarship to Pacific Lutheran University (PLU).

Grayson Peet was awarded PLU President’s Scholarship worth $26,000 a year. PLU offers a number of merit scholarships to recognize academic achievement, leadership and service, as well as the promise of continued success in these areas as a PLU student.

Presidential Scholarships are renewable for three additional years of undergraduate study.

To meet the scholarship’s requirements, a student must demonstrate significant leadership or service and achieve a minimum 3.8 grade-point average, minimum 1310 SAT score or minimum 28 ACT score.
