NEWS BRIEFS: Scientists find meteorite fragments off coast … and other items

TAHOLAH — Scientists searching the seafloor off Washington state have found remnants of a meteor that lit up the Pacific Northwest sky and splashed down in March.

The Seattle Times reports that an eight-hour search at sea Monday yielded two tiny fragments of molten rock.

NASA’s curator of cosmic dust, Mark Fries, says the fragments must be examined more closely to confirm they came from the meteor but he’s optimistic.

He says it’s the first intentional search for meteorites at sea.

Meteorites are bits of material left over from the formation of the solar system.

Crew members aboard the Nautilus, the nonprofit ship that conducted the search, said the search was challenging because the seafloor was soft and muddy.

Candidate forum

PORT TOWNSEND — The League of Women Voters Jefferson County and American Association of University Women will co-sponsor a forum for the Jefferson County Sheriff and Jefferson County Prosecutor elections at 7 p.m. Monday.

Members of the public are invited to the forum at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St.

Joe Nole and David Stanko are running for the county sheriff in the Nov. 6 election.

James Kennedy and Michael Haas are running for county prosecuting attorney.

A short intermission with coffee and cookies is planned.

Phil Andrus will moderate the forum.

Small business-competition

PORT ORCHARD — Applications are being accepted for Kitsap Bank’s Edg3 Fund small-business competition.

The application period runs through 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 31. To access the application and rules, visit www.kitsapbank.com/edg3-fund.

The bank will award a $20,000 cash prize to a business that is having a positive impact on the community economically, socially or environmentally.

After the application period ends, semifinalists will be chosen, with public voting taking place through Kitsap Bank’s Facebook page Sept. 17-28

Finalists will be selected by public vote to present their pitches at a live event Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Kitsap Conference Center at Harborside in Bremerton.

An independent panel of judges will determine the winner.

For-profit small businesses in the communities the bank serves are encouraged to apply.

Customer appreciation BBQ

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Veterinary Clinic has set a customer appreciation barbecue for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14.

Clients are invited to the event at the clinic, 1331 E. Front St., food and a raffle until 1 p.m.

Kiddie pools and activities for dogs also will be featured.

Well-behaved pets on a leash are invited.
