NEWS BRIEFS: Registration for voters set … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Elections will celebrate National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday.

Registered voters who have changed residences, added or eliminated a separate mailing address, or changed their name are encouraged to update their voter registration at the auditor’s office in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.

Those who drop by the office can receive a vote pin and sticker.

County residents have until Monday, Oct. 9, to transfer their voter registration from another Washington county or update their current registration via mail postmarked to the courthouse; online at www.myvote.wa.gov; or by contacting county elections at 360-417-2221 or jmaxion@co.clallam.wa.us.

Such updates are not made automatically, according to a news release.

Library closure

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Public Library will be closed Wednesday.

Regular hours will resume Thursday at the library, 1220 Lawrence St.

The closure is a result of a day-long library staff training program, with the aim of providing better service to the community, according to a news release.

Scholarships given

SEQUIM — Soroptimist International of Sequim recently announced five recipients of its Continuing Education Scholarship awards.

Qualifying recipients either graduated from Sequim High School or live within the boundaries of Sequim.

Sunma Agostine received a $2,500 scholarship and is enrolled at the University of Washington, working toward receiving her Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Deanna Kubas received $2,000 and has been accepted into the nursing program at Peninsula College.

Victoria Cummins is enrolled at the University of Washington and majoring in business.

Alexis Thill attends Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., and is majoring in psychology.

Madison Morris attends Peninsula College and is majoring in early childhood education.

Kubs, Cummins, Thill and Morris all received $2,000 scholarships.

All the recipients have goals to receive their bachelor’s and further their education in a master’s or doctorate program, according to a news release.

Science scholar

BOTHELL — Former Clallam Bay High School graduate Kathleen Gonzales received a $1,000 scholarship from the inaugural Orca Bowl competition.

The bowl was organized by the National Ocean Sciences Bowl for bowl competitors who have ocean-science-based aspirations for their future.

Gonzales is a freshman attending the University of Washington, Bothell, campus and majoring in oceanography.

According to a news release: “As Kathleen learns more through her college education, she hopes to educate others on the importance of the ocean, opening their eyes to a new interest or career choice.”
