PORT TOWNSEND — The state ferries system will repair the Coupeville terminal transfer span Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3.
No ferry service will be offered those days between Port Townsend and Coupeville on Whidbey Island.
The terminal will be closed and all ferry service on the route canceled for the weekend.
Alternate routes include the Mukilteo/Clinton or Edmonds/Kingston ferry routes, or travelers can drive around via Interstate 5 and state Highway 20, ferry officials said.
Shot baby dies
SEATTLE — A 1-year-old girl who was shot in the head in a drive-by shooting outside Seattle has died.
A spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center said the girl was brain dead and care was withdrawn Saturday night.
Police said the baby was shot in the head Thursday afternoon while sitting in a car seat in the back of a silver Chevrolet Impala at an intersection in Kent.
Her parents were in the front seat when police said a black car pulled alongside, and the driver and a passenger in that vehicle opened fire before driving off.
Authorities have said they don’t believe the shooting was random.
New shelter
SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced plans to open a new 100-bed homeless shelter on city-owned property.
Murray said the city will partner with the Downtown Emergency Service Center to fund the new shelter.
The center’s deputy director Daniel Malone said the collaboration will provide secure temporary housing as opposed to sleeping on Seattle streets.
The city has allocated $350,000 to fund the project.
Murray said the new facility should be ready to open its doors by late summer.
