NEWS BRIEFS: Port Angeles student earns Feiro scholarship … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School senior Bridget Lachner received the third annual Feiro Family Scholarship.

The award was delegated during Feiro Marine Life Center’s Feb. 11 “Fish on the Fence” fundraiser event at the Red Lion Hotel.

Lachner, who volunteers as a naturalist at the Feiro Marine Life Center, intends to study at a two-year college before transferring and earning her terminal degree in education, according to a news release.

Applicants are selected on the basis of their personal connection to the center’s mission to a strong community by providing local marine and watershed learning experiences, inspiring us all to act on behalf of our environment, according to the release.

The $1,000 award was made possible by private donations to a scholarship fund, started in honor of Art Feiro.

Applications for the 2019 scholarship will open at an unspecified date in December.

The fundraiser brought in more than $40,000 from 167 attendees.

According to the release: “The event was the last official ‘Fish on the Fence’ titled fundraiser for the Marine Life Center, which will look ahead in 2019 with a new theme, ‘Making Waves.’ ”

Presenting sponsors included Hartnagel Building Supply and Angeles Millwork, Kitsap Bank and Merrill & Ring.

Sarge’s farmstand logo

FORKS — The North Olympic Regional Veteran’s Housing Network announced it will hold an art contest to find a logofor its new farmstand.

Hand-drawn, hand-painted or computer-generated submissions are due by midnight Saturday, March 31. Submissionscan be emailed to sarge@sargeplace.com or postmarked to Sarge’s Place, 250 Ash Ave., Forks, WA, 98331.

Designs are requested to include the name “Sarge’s Farmstand;” fruit, vegetables and flowers; and Sarge’s logo. Toreceive a copy of the logo, email sarge@sargeplace.com.

The winner will be announced at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 10 on Sarge’s Facebook page.

The winner also will receive a $100 gift card from Sarge’s Attic secondhand store, 260 Sol Duc Way.

The farmstand is slated to open Tuesday, May 1.

NORVHN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency serving the homeless Veterans of Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Sequim student lauded

SEQUIM — Sequim Sunrise Rotary has named Richard Meier as its January Middle School Student of the Month.

His favorite subjects are science, game design and robotics.

He would like to join the U.S. Air Force Academy, serve as an officer and then become a commercial airline pilot orengineer with Boeing, according to a news release.

Meier is the son of Richard and Terri Meier, of Sequim.

Bright Haygood scholarship available

PORT ANGELES — A $1,000 scholarship is available to a single mother attending Peninsula College during the 2017-18academic year.

Applications for the Bright Haygood Copsey Scholarship are posted on the college’s financial aid website atwww.pencol.edu.

The application deadline is Monday, April 30. The award is based on the potential to benefit and financial need.

Applicants can be part-time or full-time students attending the entire 2017-18 academic year.

Conservation breakfast

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Land Trust’s annual Conservation Breakfast will be held Thursday, March 29.

Those interested in attending are to RSVP to the trust via email at info@saveland.org by Thursday, March 22.

The breakfast will be held at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St.

This year’s key note speaker will be Wendy Jackson, executive vice president of the Land Trust Alliance in WashingtonD.C.

She will talk about ripple effects of the innovative conservation work happening in Jefferson County.
