SEATTLE — The founder of the Olympic Peninsula’s Korean War Veterans Association, Gerald “Jerry” Rettela of Port Angeles, said in an email last week that he will be honored at today’s Seahawks game at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
“It appears that they want to honor me for all the veterans work that I do,” Rettela said in the email that was sent to the Peninsula Daily News. “Quite an honor.”
Rettela, who serves as president of the Olympic Peninsula’s Korean War Veterans Association, reportedly expects to be honored during the third quarter of the game with the 49ers. He could not be reached for comment.
He and about 14 other members of the veterans association received Sept. 9 a plaque from NaHye Kwon, a researcher with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Seattle. The plaque is engraved with the words “In Honor and Memory of Korean War Veterans.”
Among Rettela’s accomplishments is his effort to have Clallam County highways named for veterans.
They include state Highway 112 between U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 113, Vietnam War Veterans’ Memorial Highway; state Highway 113, Korean War Veterans’ Blue Star Memorial Highway; state Highway 110, Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial Highway; and state Highway 117, designated in memory of POWs and MIAs.

PORT ANGELES — The Queen of Angels Parents’ Club will have a rummage sale at the Queen of Angels gym, 213 W. 11th St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Second-hand store
FORKS — The North Olympic Regional Veteran’s Housing Network will open a second-hand store, Sarge’s Attic, located within Camp Sol Duc’s garage at 260 Sol Duc Way, on Monday, Oct. 3.
Store hours will be Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The store will predominately sell furniture, household items, antiques and collectibles.
The network is a nonprofit serving homeless veterans within Clallam and Jefferson counties. The agency runs Sarge’s Place and Camp Sol Duc.
All proceeds will help pay for operating and employment development for Sarge’s Place.

Advisory committee
SEQUIM — The city is seeking applicants to serve on its Arts Commission for the remainder of a four-year term expiring in December 2018.
This voluntary commission advises the city on matters related to art and culture.
Applicants must reside in the city limit.
Members will be appointed based on demonstrated interest in, knowledge and support of the arts.
Responsibilities include making recommendations to the staff and City Council in connection with cultural and artistic endeavors and projects in which the City becomes involved and carry out Council approved plans.
