NEWS BRIEFS: Peninsula College opens registration … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College staff will help students register for classes, apply for funding and offer other services during Step into Fall Registration Day on Monday.

Walk-ins are welcome between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the student services building — Building D — on the Peninsula College campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Visitors can get help in applying to Peninsula College and finding funding, completing orientation, being placed into English and math classes, meeting with an advisor and registering for classes.

Food and prizes are planned.

Letters for PDA member positions

PORT TOWNSEND — The city seeks qualified individuals to serve on the Fort Worden Public Development Authority (PDA) Board.

Three board seats are slated to expire Oct. 24 on the board which is made of seven to 11 members.

Those interested are requested to submit a letter of interest and resume to Karolina Anderson, executive coordinator, as word attachments to kanderson@fortworden.org.

Email subject lines are required to read as: “PDA Board Member Candidate.”

A position announcement and board member job description is available online at www.fortworden.org.

Board membership is not compensated and voluntary.

Existing board members and new candidates must apply for new three-year terms.

Ideal board members should possess experience in real estate development, historic preservation, construction and project management, marketing, public relations, historical research or hospitality and restaurant management fields.

A Nominating Committee will interview and recommend candidates to city council, according to a news release.

Candidates are confirmed by the council.

Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the third week of September, according to the release.

Positions are open until confirmed by council.

Free classes for sourdough bread starter

Victoria Redhead Miller will lead free sourdough starter classes at four North Olympic Library System (NOLS) branches.

Registration is required to attend.

Miller will present at libraries in Sequim, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 11 a.m. Tuesday; Port Angeles 2210 S. Peabody St., 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20; and Friday, Sept. 28 at Clallam Bay, 16990 state Highway 112, at 1 p.m., and Forks, 171 S. Forks Ave., at 4 p.m.

Miller is the author of “From No-knead to Sourdough: A Simpler Approach to Handmade Bread” and will provide instruction on making, maintaining and baking with sourdough.

Sourdough starter — which is activated by wild yeast — can be used for making a lot more than just loaf breads and pizza, according to a news release.

Participants are invited to bring their own wide-mouthed, pint-sized jars and a lid.

Jars also will be provided.

Following her presentation, Miller will have copies of her book for sale and signing.

Miller lives on a 40-acre off-the-grid farm outside of Sequim.

Flight operations

COUPEVILLE — There will be field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Coupeville carrier night to late night Monday.
