NEWS BRIEFS: PASD board meeting set for Thursday … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles School District directors will approve the adoption of operating budgets when they meet Thursday.

The meeting will be held at the district’s Central Services Building, 216 E. Fourth St. beginning with a budget hearing at 6 p.m., with the regular meeting following at 7 p.m.

Also on the agenda is an approval of the 2018-19 board committees and school assignments, as well as approval of the Comfort and Cozy contract.

Directors will also convene for an executive session following the regular session.

Workshop planned

PORT ANGELES — Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County’s “Living Alone Now” workshop is set for Sept. 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration is required for the free class. To register, contact VHOCC’s office at 360-452-1511 or vsm@vhocc.org.

Mark Harvey will facilitate the workshop at Hospice House, 810 S. Albert St.

The workshop is designed to offer a discussion between Harvey and those experiencing a transition due to the recent loss of a life partner, according to a news release.

Harvey requests that participants submit questions about Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care, in-home help and end-of-life planning in advance so he can address individual concerns.

Questions can be submitted by contacting VHOCC’s office.

Harvey writes “Help Line,” a weekly Peninsula Daily News column that focuses on issues including aging, caregiving and end-of-life preparation.

Scholarships awarded to two local graduates

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Chapter 74 of the International Footprint Association’s scholarship program awarded $1,500 in scholarships to two recent area high school graduates.

The awardees are Colton McGuffey, home school/Peninsula College, and Adam DiFilippo, Sequim High School, who are both pursuing education to become paramedic firefighters.

The winners and their families were dinner guests at a June dinner-meeting at the Sequim Elks Lodge.

McGuffey, son of Wicus and Michelle McGuffey, will continue to attend the college in the Bachelor of Applied Management program after earning his Associate of Arts degree along with his high school diploma and taking the Emergency Medical Technician Certification Course.

DiFilippo, son of Joe and Mary DiFilippo, plans to attend the college to earn his EMT certification and further his education to become a paramedic.

The Chapter No. 74 Footprint Scholarship Program was initiated in the spring of 2005 and thus far has awarded more than $27,000 in scholarships, according to a news release.

Project Linus Club celebrates the year

PORT ANGELES — Stevens Middle School’s Project Linus Club recently held an end-of-the year party, at which time all blankets were folded and presented to Phyllis Carey, president of the Peninsula Chapter of Project Linus to be distributed to children at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

The group crafted 74 blankets throughout the school year.

Middle school para-educator Evelyn Ellsworth is the club’s advisor.

Group members met regularly at the Port Angeles Library since last winter.

Chorus starts rehearsals

SEQUIM — The Sequim Community Christmas Chorus has announced Tuesday, Sept. 18, as the first day for its 2018 season rehearsals.

Registration will begin at 6 p.m., followed by rehearsals at 6:30 p.m. They will be held at Sequim Seventh-day Adventist Church, 30 Sanford Lane.

The chorus is open to singers of all levels of experience, and participation requires no fees or auditions.

Preregistration is not required, but can be completed by picking up a form at Bauer Interior Designs, 119 N. Sequim Ave., or by emailing gail@gailsumpter.com.

Rehearsals will continue Tuesday nights.

Performances are scheduled for Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Dec. 1-2 at 3 p.m.

The chorus will be directed by Louise Pluymen, who has directed choirs in the Netherlands.

She will be accompanied by pianist Kayla Layer.

Although the Chorus sings only sacred Christmas music, it has no religious affiliation and is presented in cooperation with the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, according to a news release.

First Fed in PA updates branch hours

PORT ANGELES — First Federal’s Eastside Branch at 1603 E. First St. will be open Saturdays, beginning Sept. 8.

The change is due in part to the branch’s remodel nearing completion, according to a news release.

Saturdays hours will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Additionally, the First Federal Sixth Street Branch at 227 E. Sixth St. will be closed Saturdays until further notice starting the same day, according to the release.
