BELLINGHAM — A Port Angeles Coast Guard crew was among those to help two people whose boat started taking on water in Canadian waters Saturday afternoon.
Joint Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Mounted Police boat crews aboard two Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat-Mediums from stations Bellingham and Port Angeles assisted the boaters and dewatered the vessel near Boundary Pass, according to a Sunday press release.
Commercial operators towed the boat to Vector Marina in Sidney, B.C.
The Coast Guard and RCMP crews were conducting a routine joint patrol as part of the International Cross-Border Maritime Law Enforcement Operations agreement, also known as Shiprider, when the crew of Island Magic, a 50-foot Canadian-registered pleasure craft, signaled the boat crews and reported the boat was taking on water.
The joint boat crews crossed into Canadian waters and rendered dewatering assistance until the vessel could be safely towed.
Shiprider members of the Coast Guard and the RCMP are specially trained and cross-designated to enforce laws and provide help on both sides of the border in shared waterways, according to the press release.
Landing practice
COUPEVILLE — Field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Outlying Field will commence at the outlying field midafternoon Tuesday.
Operations will continue Wendesday evening.
Aircraft carrier-based flight training also will occur at Ault Field midafternoon Wednesday.
Practice will continue Thursday evening. Operations have also been set for early morning Friday.

PA needs committee members
PORT ANGELES — The city is accepting applications to fill two vacancies on its Utility Advisory Committee.
To obtain an application, visit www.cityofpa.us, or drop by the City Manager’s Office in City Hall, 321 E. Fifth Ave. Applications are due by Wednesday, Feb. 14.
Two community representatives are needed for the committee.
The committee gives advisory recommendations to the council on matters relating to city utility policy and operation.
Members are appointed to four-year terms, with a limit of two consecutive terms.
The committee meets the second Tuesday of each month, at 3 p.m. in City Hall.

LA GRANDE, Ore. — Former Port Angeles student Wyatt Frantz was named to Eastern Oregon University’s dean’s list for the 2017 fall quarter.
To qualify, a student must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework.
