NEWS BRIEFS: One injured in Highway 101 wreck east of Port Angeles … and other items

PORT ANGELES — The driver of a Lincoln Town Car was transferred to Olympic Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries after a wreck on U.S. Highway 101 east of Port Angeles on Tuesday, according to the State Patrol.

At about 1 p.m., Vyacheslav Shatilov, 31, driving the Town Car westbound on Highway 101, crossed the centerline near Morse Creek and hit a Chevrolet Express Van, said Trooper Russ Winger, State Patrol spokesman.

The van, which was traveling eastbound, was carrying stone that spilled across the road, he said. Traffic was blocked in both directions as the road was swept.

The road was back open by 1:40 p.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

Winger said the wreck was under investigation and it wasn’t yet clear why Shatilov crossed the centerline.

Plastics forum

PORT ANGELES — A coalition that is working to reduce pollution from plastics will share information at a public forum in Port Angeles on Nov. 28.

The Plastics Reduction Coalition’s “Trash Talk” will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Raymond Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Melinda Gelder of the coalition will present research on plastics and what can be done to reduce plastics pollution.

Last week, the Port Angeles City Council was asked to consider a prohibition on plastic bags at grocery stores inside the city.

A majority of the council agreed to discuss the issue after four new council members are sworn in this January.

Plastic bags are banned at stores in 13 Western Washington cities, including Port Townsend, and in Thurston County, according to the Municipal Research and Services Center.
