Play tryouts

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Community Players will hold tryouts for the second play of its 65th season, “Making God Laugh,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Auditions will be at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Roles are available for three men to play a father, a son who is a former football star and a son who is a priest, and two women — one to play a mother and another to play a sister who is an aspiring actress.

The play by Sean Grennan and directed by Barbara Frederick will be on stage Nov. 24 to Dec. 10.

It follows a family throughout 30 years of holiday gatherings in which the audience discovers their plans and dreams. Old family rituals are trotted out and ancient tensions flare up as the family discovers that, despite what they might have in mind, people often arrive at unexpected destinations.

Rehearsals will begin in early October.

Tryouts consist of reading from the script. Copies of the script are available at the Port Angeles and Sequim public libraries.

For questions concerning the tryouts, phone Frederick at 360-477-5044.

New Navy destroyer

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A new Navy destroyer named for a Marine who died in Vietnam will be commissioned in South Carolina next year.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that the USS Ralph Johnson will be commissioned in March in Charleston.

Johnson jumped on a grenade in Vietnam in 1968, dying as he saved the life of a fellow Marine. Johnson was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.

The Navy said in 2012 the ship would be named for the 19-year-old Johnson, who lived in Charleston.

The Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston was renamed for Johnson in 1991.

The nearly $700 million ship will be based in Everett when it joins the fleet.
