PORT ANGELES — Those who are trying to reach the new North Olympic Peninsula Clinic by the old clinic’s number aren’t getting through.
An expanded outpatient clinic for veterans in Clallam and Jefferson counties opened at 1114 Georgiana St. on Feb. 18.
It replaced the former Veteran Affairs clinic one block away at 1005 Georgiana St.
Veterans who call the phone number for the now-closed clinic — 360-565-9330 — won’t reach the new one, said Chad Hutson, spokesman for the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System.
“It simply doesn’t work,” he said.
Instead, those who want appointments or information must phone 360-565-7420.
Many veterans who get services at the clinic were used to calling the old clinic’s number, Hutson said.
Health care system officials contacted the phone company to have the older number forward people to the new number but have found that the request must come from Olympic Medical Center, Hutson said.
The old clinic was rented from OMC for $1 annually.
Hutson expects to have the forwarding message on the old number soon but said that in the meantime, veterans should call the new one.
Fire agency sends b-day wishes to kid
PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Fire-Rescue firefighters gathered recently to send birthday wishes to a Rhode Island boy who is battling leukemia.
Six-year-old Tyler Seddon is about to turn 7 and has asked for birthday cards from first responders, who he says are his favorite people.
The firefighters are sending Tyler a photograph, a birthday card and an autographed helmet.
Tyler has been diagnosed with leukemia for the second time and is undergoing chemotherapy while doctors search for a bone marrow donor.
A Facebook page and GoFundMe account have been set up to keep his community updated on his progress and to help with donations while he awaits his March 6 birthday.

Spaying, neutering
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society is offering free and low-cost spaying and neutering for cats Sunday, March 9.
Feral and free-roaming cats and kittens will be fixed for free.
Owned cats and kittens will be fixed for $10.
Cats must be brought to the future site of the Humane Society, 1743 Old Olympic Highway, in the morning and get picked up in the afternoon.
There is no limit to the number of cats brought in.
All cats must be registered for the clinic prior to Saturday, March 8.
Registration is at the current shelter site at 2105 W. U.S. Highway 101.
