NEWS BRIEFS: M/V Salish is returned to service . . . and other items

PORT TOWNSEND— The MV Salish was returned to service Thursday afternoon after it was repaired that morning.

The ferry on the Port Townsend-Coupeville route was back in service in time for its 2:45 p.m. sailing.

A problem with the rudder assembly was discovered during a safety check that morning which resulted in the cancelation of sailings scheduled for 8:45 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

Repair was completed at about noon, said Ian Sterling, Washington State Ferries spokesman.

It was examined by the Coast Guard before it went back into service.

The repair was unrelated to a propeller problem which caused a three-week delay in the beginning of summer service, Sterling said.

Intensive care

PORT TOWNSEND — A 74-year-old Port Townsend woman was in intensive care in a Seattle hospital on Thursday after a single-car wreck Wednesday evening.

Gail Madeleine Thompson was traveling southbound on state Highway 19 about 13 miles south of Port Townsend at 5:54 p.m. when she suffered a medical emergency, the State Patrol said.

Her Honda veered off the roadway to the right, struck a tree and rolled down a ravine, the State Patrol said.

Thompson was airlifted to Haborview Medical Center, which reported her in serious condition in intensive care Thursday.

She was wearing a seat belt.

Her car was completely destroyed.
