NEWS BRIEFS: MV Coho to take two-week break starting Tuesday … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Black Ball Ferry Line’s MV Coho ferry, which runs daily between Victoria and Port Angeles, will take its annual maintenance break from Tuesday through Feb. 3.

While in drydock, the company will refurbish and add more seating to the Coho’s solarium deck.

The glassed-in seating area on the ferry’s upper passenger deck offers views of the Salish Sea and Olympic Peninsula during the 90-minute crossing.

“We continue to invest in improvements to the ferry and our terminals in Victoria and Port Angeles,” said Ryan Malane, vice president of marketing for Black Ball Ferry Line.

“The refurbishment of the popular solarium deck is one more way we are enhancing the travel experience for our passengers.”

The Coho’s last sailing from Port Angeles will be at 8:20 a.m. Monday. The last sailing from Victoria will depart at 10:30 a.m.

Regular service will resume Feb. 4 when the Coho departs Port Angeles at 8:20 a.m. and later from Victoria at 4 p.m.

Sequim office closure

SEQUIM— The city of Sequim finance and utility billing office will be closed from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. today.

The office is in the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

The closure is for a staff planning meeting.

Port of Port Townsend commissioner to speak

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Commissioner Steve Tucker will be speaking at Port Townsend Yacht Club, 2503 Washington St. on Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the monthly meeting of Point Wilson Sail and Power Squadron.

Tucker will speak about why ports exist, the history of local ports and future plans for Port of Port Townsend.

This event is open to the public.

Through Coast Guard Auxiliary and Point Wilson Sail & Power Squadron, Steve has taught courses in boating safety, maintenance, navigation and electronics, including the recent Squadron course on engine maintenance.

City seeks applicants for vacancies

PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles is accepting applications to fill two vacancies on the Parks, Recreation & Beautification Commission.

Members give advisory recommendations to the city council on all matters relating to parks, recreation and beautification; and cooperate with and advise the parks and

recreation director in the development and implementation of a comprehensive recreation program, a comprehensive park development program, beautification programs and the general appearance of the city.

The commission also has the power to accept donations for parks and recreation purposes and, with council consent, real property for park purposes, with the city holding the title.

The commission also cooperates with the director in resolving any problems or complaints arising from departmental programs or facilities.

The seven commission members are appointed to four-year terms, with a limit of two consecutive terms.

Members shall be residents of the city and shall serve without compensation.

The commission meets the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in Vern Burton meeting rooms, 308 E. Fourth St.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3.

Specialist at OMC earns certification

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Medical Heart Center exercise specialist Kyle Miller recently earned certification from the American College of Sports Medicine as a registered clinical exercise physiologist.

According to the college, registered clinical exercise physiologists use scientific rationale to design, implement and supervise exercise programming for those with chronic diseases, conditions or physical limitations.

Miller joined Olympic Medical Heart Center in May.

He completed a master’s degree in kinesiology and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Boise State University.

Miller is set to become the wellness program coordinator for Olympic Medical Wellness Services, which will be located in the Sequim YMCA at 610 N. Fifth Ave. and is expected to open later this winter.

Taize service

SEQUIM — All are welcome to the ecumenical Taize service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., at 7 p.m. ­Monday.

There will be a meditative, candlelit atmosphere that includes singing simple, repetitive songs during the hourlong service.

Taize will continue to be held the fourth Monday of each month.
