NEWS BRIEFS — Minor injuries reported after wreck on U.S. Highway 101 west of Sequim . . . and other items

SEQUIM — A 66-year-old woman was transported to Olympic Medical Center with minor injuries after a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 101 at Taylor Cutoff Road west of Sequim on Thursday morning, according to Clallam County Fire District No. 3.

Patrick Young, spokesman for the department, said paramedics were called to the wreck at about 10 a.m. Thursday.

It involved a newer-model Ford Mustang and an older-model pickup truck.

“The Mustang had pretty significant damage to the front end, and the pickup truck had minor damage to the passenger-side rear,” Young said.

The man driving the truck was not injured, Young said, while the woman in the Mustang was taken by ambulance to Olympic Medical Center with minor injuries.

Young could not give the names of either person involved due to patient privacy laws.

Calls to the State Patrol about the wreck were not immediately returned.

The wreck blocked the eastbound lane of Highway 101 for about 20 minutes, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Classical guitar

PORT ANGELES — A concert featuring classical guitarist Rodger Bennett and pianist Kristin Quigley Brye will start at 10:30 a.m. today in Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Admission is free to the hourlong performance.

Bennett is visiting from Texas, where he works at Dallas County’s Brookhaven College.

He has been an artist-in-residence for the Texarkana Regional Arts Council and the Idaho Commission on the Arts, among other agencies; given demonstrations for the Texas Association of Music Schools and other music educators’ groups; and performed around the United States, Mexico, Canada and Europe.

Poet to present

PORT ANGELES — Poet and essayist Sheila Bender will present the final reading of the 2013-14 North Coast Writers’ season at Wine on the Waterfront, 115 E. Railroad Ave., at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The public is invited to this free event.

Bender is the author of several books about writing, including Sorrow’s Words: Writing Exercises to Heal Grief, Writing and Publishing Personal Essays and A Year in the Life: Journaling for Self-Discovery.

“Poetry is a spiritual endeavor,” Bender said. “It can restore us to ourselves and to our connections with others and the world.”

Bender, a Port Townsend resident, has taught both locally and nationally. She has a Master of Arts in creative writing from the University of Washington.

Wellness workshop

PORT TOWNSEND — A free public workshop, “Living Well with Chronic Conditions,” will be held every Tuesday for six weeks, starting this Tuesday and ending July 8.

The program will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

The Port Townsend Athletic Club, in collaboration with the Olympic Area Agency on Aging, will present two specifically trained leaders to facilitate the workshop.

This program is designed to help anyone who suffers from a chronic condition, including diabetes, asthma, heart disease, chronic pain, arthritis and hypertension.

Participants will learn to lessen their stress and frustration, manage symptoms and deal with fatigue.

Those caring for a loved one with a chronic condition may benefit from this workshop also.

Space for the workshop is limited, so early registration is urged.
