NEWS BRIEFS: Maintenance work delays state Highway 116 this week … and other items

PORT HADLOCK — The state Department of Transportation has announced road work planned for this week on state Highway 116.

Today through Thursday, maintenance crews for the Department of Transportation will perform shoulder repairs and vegetation management along the highway, also known as Flagler Road, according to a press release.

Because the tasks require daylight, Highway 116 from Hunt Road to Fort Flagler State Park will be reduced to one-way alternating traffic each day from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Electronic passes

PORT ANGELES — Olympic National Park has announced that visitors can now buy park entrance passes electronically before their visit through YourPassNow.

The electronic passes go on sale beginning today.

Once an electronic pass is bought, visitors will need to print the pass and bring it with them to be scanned at the park entrance station.

“We are pleased to begin offering visitors the convenience of purchasing their park passes before they arrive,” Olympic National Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum said in the release.

The park uses entrance fees to invest in improvements that benefit visitors, including maintaining

and enhancing visitor facilities, according to the release.

The electronic passes will be accepted at all Olympic National Park entrance stations.

The following Olympic passes are available through YourPassNow:

Private vehicle ($30, valid for seven

days)

Motorcycle ($25, valid for seven days)

Individual/bicycle ($15, valid for seven

days)

Olympic Annual Pass ($55, valid for one year from month of purchase)

The federal interagency annual pass, the America the Beautiful — The National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass Series, is not available through YourPassNow, but is available at Olympic National Park and online.

Sweaters for Veterans drive to start

PORT ANGELES — Drennan & Ford Funeral Home will hold its ninth annual Sweaters for Veterans clothes drive.

Donations of new or gently used sweaters, warm clothing, blankets, rain gear, gloves, hats and socks will be distributed to individual veterans in Clallam County.

The funeral home at 260 Monroe Road will accept donations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays from Tuesday through Friday, Nov. 9.

Throughout the past eight years the funeral home has collected thousands of cold weather articles from people in Clallam County.

Wyatt’s Toy Drive

CHIMACUM — The 13th annual Wyatt’s Toy drive focuses on developmentally appropriate toys, games and equipment for children with special needs from birth to age 21 in Jefferson and Clallam counties.

Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and Clallam Mosaic are accepting toy or equipment requests from families with children who have special needs.

Toys and equipment are bought specifically for each child with most recommendations for toys coming from therapists.

The deadline to make requests is Thursday.

Donors also are encouraged to donate to the annual toy drive.

Caregiver training

PORT ANGELES — The Alliance for Child Welfare Excellence will host a 24-hour caregiver core training course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10.

The free training is available for people interested in becoming foster parents.

The classes will be presented by Robert Judd in the ballroom at the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), 201 W. First St., Suite 2.

Registration is required.

Attendees also must attend the orientation from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the DCFS office.

Kiwanis officers

PORT ANGELES — The Kiwanis Club of Port Angeles installed new officers during its meeting Sept. 27 at Joshua’s Restaurant.

The following officers were sworn in: President Darcey Beck, President-elect Peggy Norris, Vice-president Liz Waud, Treasurer Barb Wilson and Secretary Leslie Spotkov.

The club supports community projects and organizations such as Kids Fest, Camp Beausite NW, the annual Back to School Event, PAHS Key Club, VIMO and more.

During its meeting, the club also honored the Kiwanis Woodcutters as Kiwanis Volunteers of the Year.

The Woodcutters meet each Wednesday to split, sort and deliver wood to customers, sometimes filling requests for low-income families.
