NEWS BRIEFS: League of Women Voters website gives information on candidates . . . and other items

A League of Women Voters website provides information on candidates in local, regional and state races.

The website, VOTE411.org, can be personalized for an individual voter It provides biographical information and statements from candidates. Voters enter their home addresses and then can access what candidates think about issues.

Candidates for both the Aug. 2 primary election and the Nov. general election are included.

Washington state’s top-two primary narrows the field to two candidates. The two who win the most votes advance to the Nov. 8 general election regardless of party affiliation.

American Legion Riders

PORT ANGELES — Positively Port Angeles will showcase American Legion Post 29 Riders on Monday.

The show hosted will be at 5 p.m. on Wave Cable Channel 21.

It is hosted by Cherie Kidd, who is also deputy mayor of Port Angeles.

61-mile-long garage sale approaches

The Juan de Fuca Scenic Byway Association will sponsor the ninth annual Great Strait Sale along state Highway 112 on Sept. 10.

The Great Strait Sale is a 61-plus-mile-long series of yard sales, business specials, art and crafts sales, and fundraisers along the length of the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Highway 112, a National Scenic Byway.

The scenic byway runs from the junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 to Neah Bay.

The sale is a community building event and serves to help introduce visitors to the Strait of Juan de Fuca community, according to a press release.

Highway 112 residents, business and civic groups are encouraged to participate.

KONP talk guests

PORT ANGELES — Here is this week’s schedule for the 1:05 p.m. to 2 p.m. local talk show segment on KONP radio, at 1450 AM, 101.7 FM and www.konp.com on the internet outside the Port Angeles area.

Third segment: National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Executive Director Lauren Simmons discusses mental illness issues and the upcoming state conference being held in Port Angeles.

Volunteers needed for Sequim OTA

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., is seeking new active volunteers for its expanded volunteer program.

The OTA committee has designed a new process to make it easier for volunteers to sign up, to enhance the communication process between the volunteers and the OTA staff, and to let the volunteers know about all of the different opportunities.

Giant-sized games

FORKS — The Forks Library will host “Giant Games” at Tillicum Park, 236 Blackberry Ave., at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Participants will be able to play giant-sized versions of family games including Jenga, dice, Angry Birds and KerPlunk.

PA CAN meeting

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Citizens Action Network will host speaker John R. Lynch at the Clallam County Courthouse in room 160, 223 E. Fourth St., at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lynch will present on the cycles of addiction including defining what addiction is, effects on the brain and breaking the cycle of addiction.

Lynch is the Co-occurring Disorder Program Coordinator at Peninsula Behavioral Health.

Potluck picnic

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, will host its potluck picnic starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Members and the community are invited.

Hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided and the game horseshoes will be played.

Water storytime

PORT ANGELES — Storytime at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., will be led by guest readers from the William Shore Memorial Pool at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Participants ages 3-5 will hear stories and rhymes, and learn water safety tips.

Attendees also will be entered into a drawing for a one-day pass to the pool.

Lobo Del Mar show

SEQUIM — The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will host the Celtic band and dance troupe Lobo Del Mar at 6 p.m. Friday.

The performance will take place on the outdoor stage behind the library.

New majors for Salvation Army in PA

PORT ANGELES — The Salvation Army Northwest Division has announced the appointment of Majors Ron and Barbara Wehnau to the Port Angeles Salvation Army, 206 S. Peabody St., who began work June 29.

“We look forward to serving in Port Angeles to help meet the needs of the community members throughout the area,” said Ron Wehnau.

The Wehnaus previously served at the Salvation Army in Richland.

The Salvation Army in Port Angeles provides social services to families in need.

Among the programs offered are meal program, rent and utility assistance, and emergency disaster services.

Annual dog show

SEQUIM — The annual Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club dog show will take place at Sequim High School on the football field this Friday through Sunday, July 31.

On Friday, the obedience and rally competitions will start at 10 a.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, conformation will also be added starting at 8 a.m.

There will be demonstrations of freestyle dog dancing at noon by the Emerald City K-9 Freestyle Dancers on Saturday and by Nose Work on Sunday.

Also the Best Puppy award will be given to one of more than 45 puppies at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to attend and watch.

Family festival

FORKS — The Forks Elks Lodge, 941 Merchants Road, will host the third annual Western Hoedown and Family Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event is free.

Activities include hay rides, archery, gem panning, Western games, face painting, prizes and sno-cones.

The first 100 children to arrive will receive a free cowboy hat and bandana.

Bird-watching trip

PORT TOWNSEND — The Admiralty Audubon Society will host a bird-watching field trip along the spit between Kilisut Harbor and Port Townsend Bay from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Participants should meet at Fort Flagler, 10541 Flagler Road, Nordland, in the campground parking lot.

The field trip is free, but a Discover Pass is needed to enter the park.

To reach the meeting place, enter Fort Flagler, drive to the four-way stop, turn left onto Campground Road and follow it to the end to the parking lot across from the RV campground.

Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, spotting scopes and field guides, and to dress comfortably with a hat and hiking shoes.

‘Journey off the Map’ is set in Sequim

SEQUIM — Sequim Adventist Church, 30 Sanford Lane, will host a vacation bible school from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

It is free and open to the public for children ages 4 to 12.

The theme will be “Journey off the Map.”

There will be music, snacks, stories, games and a special graduation program is set for Saturday.
