NEWS BRIEFS: Kilmer given highest Navy civilian award … and other items

News items for the North Olympic Peninsula.

BREMERTON — U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer has been awarded the U.S. Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award.

It is the highest honor a civilian not employed by the Navy can receive from the Secretary of the Navy, according to a news release.

The award is given to individuals with an exceptional record of public service to the Navy, Marine Corps or Department of the Navy, the news release states.

Kilmer represents the 6th Congressional District, which includes Clallam and Jefferson counties.

Kilmer, a democrat, is a Port Angeles native and Gig Harbor resident seeking his third term.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Maybus presented Kilmer with the award during an address to local leaders and military personnel in Bremerton last Friday.

The news release states that Kilmer’s efforts in office have included supporting the end of the spending cuts known as sequestration that caused the furlough of many civilian defense workers, supporting a fleet of 11 aircraft carriers while fully funding the Ohio-class submarine replacement program, and securing investments for construction at key local military installations such as Naval Base Kitsap.

Improve odds talk

PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles and Clallam PUD No. 1 will host their fourth “Improve the Odds Talks” at the Vern Burton Auditorium, 308 E. Fourth St., from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday.

The talk will discuss how to improve the odds of increased home comfort and a lower utility bill by heating a home with a ductless heat pump.

Ductless heat pumps are a proven efficient technology for heating and cooling homes and buildings which might save a homeowner up to 50 percent on their electric bills compared to a forced air furnace, according to a news release.

Port Angeles residents and commercial businesses can register in a drawing for one of two ductless heat pumps.

Two ductless heat pumps will be given away; one for a residential home and one to a commercial business located within Port Angeles.

The value of the ductless heat pump is up to $4,500.

Representatives of local heating and cooling companies will be on hand to demonstrate their products and answer questions.

Free refreshments will be provided.
