NEWS BRIEFS: Journey of Pax talk set for Aug. 30 … and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — Local Kaci Cronkhite, the author of “Finding Pax: The Unexpected Journey of a Little Wooden Boat,” will discuss her recent book and present a slideshow documenting her sailing adventures aboard Pax, a 1936 sailboat, on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

The free presentation will be at 7 p.m. in the Cotton Building, 607 Water St.

Cronkhite describes her journey as “a love story, an international mystery and a seven-year quest.”

The Jefferson County Historical Society is sponsoring the event. Donations will be accepted.

Nominations for leadership award sought

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is seeking nominations for the 2016 Eleanor Stopps Environmental Leadership Award.

The award recognizes significant contributions in the protection and stewardship of the North Olympic Peninsula natural environment. The marine center sponsors the award.

Forks gleaning

FORKS — Washington State University Clallam County Extension is calling old and new gleaners and anyone interested in food waste to attend an event to learn about the impacts of food waste and how people turn it into a resource for the community.

The event takes place at the Department of Natural Resources Conference Room, 411 Tillicum Lane, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Watch meeting

PORT ANGELES — A McDonald Street Neighborhood Watch meeting will take place in the Clallam County Courthouse’s EOC Training Room, located in the basement at 223 E. Fourth St., at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

There will be a crime prevention presentation with the Port Angeles Police Department, Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Clallam County prosecutor and Neighborhood Watch coordinator.

This is an opportunity for neighbors on McDonald Street and surrounding areas to discuss crime issues, receive current crime stats and learn how to protect their property and how to effectively communicate with each other and law enforcement, according to a news release.

Ekphrastic Evening

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Reading Series will present an Ekphrastic Evening in the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Writers are invited to share their responses to the 18th annual Art Port Townsend exhibit, “Expressions Northwest,” on display during this month in the Northwind Arts Center Gallery.

The evening is part of the monthlong calendar of Art Port Townsend arts festival activities.

The public is invited to attend this open reading as listeners.

The suggested donation for the reading is $3 to $5.

All proceeds support Northwind, a nonprofit group.

Air Affaire

SEQUIM — This year’s Olympic Peninsula Air Affaire will be held Saturday and Sunday at Sequim Valley Airport on Dorothy Hunt Lane.

The two local Academy of Model Aeronautics clubs, Olympic RC Modelers and the Sequim Aeronauts, will provide remoted-controlled flying throughout the weekend, and 100 percent of all raffle proceeds will go to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County.
