NEWS BRIEFS: Inaugural Punching Out Parkinson’s walk rescheduled for July … and other items

PORT ANGELES — The inaugural Punching Out Parkinson’s 5K Walk originally set for Sunday has been rescheduled for July 30.

Sequim Gym personnel notified the Peninsula Daily News of the change on Friday, after the story was published Friday.

The walk in July will be at 10:30 a.m. on the Olympic Discovery Trail beginning and ending at the Morse Creek Trailhead off Strait View Drive east of Port Angeles.

The fee the day of the walk will be $20.

Those with Parkinson’s disease and children younger than 12 who are accompanied by adults are admitted free.

Proceeds will support the Rock Steady Boxing Program at Sequim Gym and the National Parkinson’s Foundation.

Online survey

The Jefferson County Public Utility District is offering an online survey for households and business owners in East Jefferson County.

The survey will be used to aggregate data that determine satisfaction with existing services, demand for fiber optic or wireless residential service, and the willingness to pay for broadband services, particularly in unserved or underserved areas within the county, according to a news release.

The survey data will help the PUD determine what areas of the county are most interested and willing to commit financially to expanded broadband service.

Survey data are anticipated to be collected for one year, the PUD said.

Although the PUD is not allowed to sell directly to individual end users, the PUD can wholesale broadband services to an internet service provider, which then sells the service to individual homes and businesses.

The PUD has purchased access to COS Service Zones systems to capture the survey data.

Residents without internet access can use computers at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., Port Hadlock, to take the survey.

The survey can be accessed by visiting www.jeffpud.org.

Forest roads to open

OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST — Roads closed seasonally for wildlife in the south part of Olympic National Forest will be reopened Monday.

Forest personnel will open the gates roads including the 2451 road in the North Fork Skokomish River watershed; the 2354, 2353, and 2361 roads in the South Fork Skokomish River watershed; and the 2294 and 2270 roads in the Wynoochee River watershed.

The closures, which will last each winter season from Oct. 1 through April 30, are part of a memorandum of understanding between the national forest and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The agreement is intended to increase wildlife use of habitat, reduce siltation of lakes and streams, provide diverse recreational hunting opportunities, reduce harassment levels on deer and elk, and increase the escapement rate of buck deer and bull elk.

The road systems behind these gates will now be open to vehicle travel until Sept. 30.

For questions, phone Betsy Howell at Olympic National Forest at 360-956-2292.
