NEWS BRIEFS: Ice-cream benefit slated for Sequim . . . and other items

SEQUIM — The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, will have its first ice-cream social of the season from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 5.

Banana splits or sundaes will be available for $5 each.

Proceeds will go to benefit the Sequim Prairie Grange Building Fund.

Fellowship plans talk on inequality

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Howe Road, will present “Escalating Inequality” by Bob Nuffer at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

A forum will follow at noon about the topic.

The forum will share concerns, results of discussions and ideas for what the congregation should do.

The theme “Escalating Inequality” was chosen to be the 2014-to-2018 congregational study/action issue of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Nuffer is a member of the fellowship and a semi-retired social worker now in private practice.

Jazz Mass

PORT ANGELES — St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., will welcome the Peninsula Jazz Ensemble under the direction of David Jones and Jim Couture for its eighth annual Jazz Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday.

All are welcome.

A taco feed will follow to benefit the youth group.

Unity speaker

PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle St., will host guest speaker Kim Perkins at the 10 a.m. service Sunday.

Perkins lesson is titled “The Reality That’s You — Letting Your Inner Light Shine.”

She is an author and national speaker who has had careers in retail, telecommunications and nursing.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Child care is available during the service.

Retirement feted

PORT ANGELES — First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., will celebrate the retirement of Pastor Ted Mattie and his wife, Marilyn Mattie, at an open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 11.

Ted was ordained at First Presbyterian 37 years ago and is a member of the Presbytery of the Northwest Coast, where he has served as moderator of the Presbytery and Committee on Ministry.

Marilyn is currently a first-grade teacher and has been active in Chapter BZ of PEO, serving as president, secretary and corresponding secretary.

The community is invited to attend the open house.

Salon plans its opening celebration

SEQUIM — Xochitl’s Salon, 201 S. Sunnyside Ave., will hold its grand opening at noon Saturday.

Refreshments will be available and small gifts will be given to attendees.

The salon’s hours will be from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
