NEWS BRIEFS: ICAN Nobel Peace Prize … and other items

PORT ANGELES — A celebration of the awarding of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize to International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is planned in Port Angeles at 1 p.m. Sunday.

ICAN will receive the award Sunday at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway.

The Port Angeles celebration will be at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won the Nobel Peace Prize, announced in October, for its work to ratify a treaty banning nuclear weapons.

ICAN promotes the U.N.’s Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, a legally binding prohibition on nuclear weapons that is supported by more than 100 countries. The world’s nuclear powers have not committed to the treaty.

Celebrations of the award are planned across the state and throughout the world, said Olympic Peninsula Progressives, which in conjunction with Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, organized the Port Angeles celebration.

In Port Angeles, two videos will be shown. They will feature Beatrice Finh, Director of ICAN, and Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Guest speakers and panelists will include representatives of Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, including Tom Rogers, and Lisa and Mack Johnson.

Music and songs will be led by the local Interfaith Peace Choir.

Advisory council meet set Thursday

FORKS — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary will hold a joint meeting of its Sanctuary Advisory and Intergovernmental Policy councils from 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The public is invited to attend the free meeting at the state Department of Natural Resources’ Olympic Region Center, 411 Tillicum Ave.

In the morning, the councils will share updates on topics of interest to each organization individually, after which a discussion on topics of mutual interest will be held.

Public comment periods will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 2:25 p.m.

A presentation on Networked Ocean Observing Systems activities will be given, and the Vessel Incident Working Group will present recommendations to the superintendent.

In the afternoon, presentations include a review of the sanctuary’s Management Plan Review process, and meeting dates and locations for 2018.
