NEWS BRIEFS: Hood Canal Bridge to close for maintenance Wednesday … and other items

SHINE — Hood Canal Bridge will have total closures from 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday for routine maintenance flushing.

State Department of Transportation bridge maintenance crews will conduct two separate, back-to-back maintenance openings beginning at 8:45 a.m. that should last less than 60 minutes each, according to a Tuesday press release.

In between the maintenance openings, crews will close the state Highway 104 bridge’s drawspan and clear out traffic.

Due to the nature of the bridge flushing, the work requires daylight working conditions.

Drivers are encouraged to sign up for email updates at tinyurl.com/PDN-email alertsdot and check the Hood Canal Bridge webpage at www.wsdot.com/traffic/hoodcanal for timely information.

Travelers can also get bridge information via text messages. The service will start with a text to 468311 with the words “wsdot hood.” To unsubscribe send a text message to the same number with the words “wsdot stop.”

Prowler scared off

SEQUIM — A female intruder who might have entered a Sequim-area home through a dog door at about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday ran away after being scared away by the surprised homeowner.

Port Angeles Police K-9 Bodie and his handler, Sgt. Kevin Miller, began tracking the woman at 2:29 a.m., discontinuing the search 10 minutes later, Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada said.

There was no sign of forced entry, Viada said.

The homeowner contacted authorities 30 minutes after the 1:24 a.m. Tuesday incident in the 100 block of Forest Haven Drive, for some unknown reason not calling 9-1-1 right away, Viada said.

Alerted to the intruder’s presence by his dog’s barking, the homeowner found her prowling inside his home with a flashlight.

She ran out of the house, past his shop and into the woods, Viada said.

Two Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 1:57 a.m. and 1:59 a.m., Viada said.

Town hall meetings

U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer has announced rescheduled town hall meetings after several were postponed by the partial federal government shutdown.

In Jefferson County, the meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Quilcene School multipurpose room, 294715 U.S. Highway 101, in Quilcene.

In Clallam County, the meeting is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Peninsula College Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., in Port Angeles.

Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the meeting’s start time, according to a press release.

Kilmer represents the 6th Congressional District, which includes the North Olympic Peninsula.

He will also hold town halls in Tacoma and Montesano.

Kilmer held town halls on Facebook Live and in Kitsap and Mason counties last week.

“One of the most important things I can do as an elected representative is listen to my bosses — the people of our region,” the Gig Harbor Democrat said.

“I am looking forward to hearing from the folks I represent and sharing my ideas for ways Congress can prevent future government shutdowns and focus on the issues that matter most for our region’s families and economy.”
