SHINE – The Hood Canal Bridge will be closed to drivers intermittently Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights.
The closures allow continued efforts to replace worn mechanical components that operate the bridge’s drawspan.
Intermittent bridge closures to traffic will occur between 10 p.m. Saturday and 1 a.m. Sunday, 10 p.m. Sunday and 4 a.m. Monday, and 10 p.m. Monday and 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Crews during those hours will open the bridge to traffic during unscheduled times. The openings to traffic will occur as workloads allow.
Unusual to this set of closures is the fact that drivers may not see the drawspan open even though the bridge is closed to traffic. Tests on the mechanical components still will be occurring during those times, the state Department of Transportation said.
To facilitate holiday traffic, no overnight closures of the bridge will occur for construction during the nights of Tuesday and Wednesday, Transportation said. Normal drawspan openings for marine vessels will still occur on demand.
The closure could mean that delivery of the Peninsula Daily News will be delayed.
The newspaper is printed in Everett and brought over the bridge in the early morning hours.
Transportation awarded the $5.2 million project to Northbank Civil and Marine Inc. Work began last summer and is expected to be finished this year.

Shooting range
PORT TOWNSEND — The Commercial Shooting Facility Review Committee will continue considering the draft ordinance on commercial ranges when it meets at 2 p.m. today.
The meeting will be in the Jefferson County commissioners’ chambers at the county courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St.
In particular, the panel will review a section pertaining to operating permits.

Service award
PORT ANGELES — Eve Daitsman has been announced as the winner of the Clallam County School Retiree’s Association’s (CCSRA) Service Award.
CCSRA President Lora Barbrant bestowed the award to Daitsman during a June 19 CCSRA meeting at the Four Seasons Ranch clubhouse.
Daitsman was selected for her active volunteerism with CCSRA, the North Olympic History Center and North Olympic Library System.
Also, she organizes guest speakers for monthly CCSRA functions and assists with mini-grants for Clallam County school employees and scholarships.
Demolition practice scheduled for Bentinck Island on Tuesday
ESQUIMALT, B.C. — The land-based demolition range at Bentinck Island will be in use Tuesday, the Royal Canadian Navy announced.
The range will be in use from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Bentinck Island is located near Race Rocks in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and is used as a terrestrial demolition range by the Canadian Armed Forces.
Local residents will likely be unaware of the activities except on days when environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and wind direction affect how far the sound will travel.
Studies conducted on the potential environmental effects of Bentinck Island demolitions have found that blast noise in the marine environment during land-based demolitions is almost undetectable by acoustic equipment above that of other underwater background sounds such as waves and marine life, the Royal Canadian Navy said in a news release.
