PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Citizen Action Network (PA CAN) and Specialty Services II, a substance abuse treatment center, are working together to make the holidays brighter for those in treatment.
They are collecting new hats, scarves, gloves, hygiene products and candy as gifts for those in treatment.
Gifts can be dropped off through Dec. 20 at Specialty Services II, 825 E. Fifth St., or can be picked up by a PA CAN leader.
“Christmas can be hard on anyone. When you add that these individuals may be away from their family and loved ones, it just adds another challenge for them to go through the treatment process,” said Angie Gooding, founder of the PA CAN.
“It’s important to show those who are going through treatment that the community cares,” she added.
”We want to show them compassion, and to show them we care about their success in treatment for the sake of themselves, their families and our entire community.”

Land trust help
PORT ANGELES — Port Book and News and Bella Italia will devote a portion of their proceeds Thursday night to the North Olympic Land Trust.
The bookstore at 104 E. First St. will collect between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The restaurant at 118 E. First St. will extend its hours and be open from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The nonprofit land trust helps support conservation of local lands for farms, fish and forests.

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School’s Honor Society recently hosted its 2016 Academic awards night.
Seventy-seven students received an academic award, 94 received an academic letter, 70 received their first academic bar and 27 their second academic bar.
Academic award status is accomplished by attaining one semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Students receiving the academic letter have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher both semesters for one full year, while an academic bar is awarded to students with a GPA of 3.5 for two full years. The second academic bar recipients have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher both semesters for three full years.

Fashion event presented Friday night
PORT ANGELES — North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center students will present “A Night of Winter Wonder,” a fashion event by students of Studio 121 School of Cosmetology, on Friday.
The event will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the skills center, 905 W. Ninth St.
Hands-on practical demonstrations by cosmetology students, a runway show with avant-garde makeup and hairstyles, and hors d’oeuvres and desserts provided by skills center culinary arts students will be offered.
There will be door prizes and free giveaways during the show.
Tickets are $20 and include entry to the show and a complimentary “swag bag” valued at over $20.
