NEWS BRIEFS: Guest musician to be featured at Sunday service in Sequim … and other items

SEQUIM — Jackson Berkey, co-founder and keyboardist for Manheim Steamroller, will be a featured guest at the 10 a.m. service Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Berkey, a composer, pianist and singer, will accompany the Trinity choir’s presentation of his dramatic arrangement of “Amazing Grace.” He also will perform on the piano immediately before the start of the service.

Unity speaker

PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics’ 10:30 a.m. worship service guest speaker will be the Rev. Trisha Burson-Johnson.

Her lesson is titled “Fallible Fables.”

According to a news release: “What fables have been created about how we are to live our lives? What does it mean to be ‘good’ or ‘successful’? What does it feel like when our life doesn’t match the fable we’ve bought into? Can we hold a space for the full story of who we are? These questions will be explored as we dive deep into our own internal wisdom to discover more about how to love our whole self.”

Burson-Johnson the spiritual director for the Center for Spiritual Living in Port Angeles.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Child care is available during the service.

Evening talk

PORT TOWNSEND — Parents and youths ages 9 to 18 are invited to a free speaker event about mindful self-compassion from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 18.

Lorraine Hobbs and Tim Burnett will discuss how to reduce stress and tools for challenging times in adolescence as well as introduce the program “Making Friends with Yourself” at the Quaker Meeting House, located at 1847 Sheridan St.

Hobbs is the director of family programs at the University of California San Diego’s Center for Mindfulness and co-creator of “Making Friends with Yourself.”

Burnett is the executive director of Mindfulness Northwest.

Those interested are encouraged to register in advance.

Taize service

SEQUIM — All are welcome to the ecumenical Taize service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. at 7 p.m. Monday, March 27.

There will be a meditative, candlelit atmosphere that includes singing simple, repetitive songs during the hourlong service.

Taize will continue to be held the fourth Monday of each month.

PA FBLA members win at winter conference

PORT ANGELES — Thirty-two Port Angeles High School Future Business Leaders of America members recently traveled to Pacific Lutheran University to compete in the Puget Sound Region Winter Conference.

“Not the steady rain or a two-hour bus breakdown deterred our Port Angeles High School chapter of FBLA from a successful day of competition,” said Bernie Brabant, co-adviser for the student organization, in a news release.

“This conference is a qualifier for our state conference, held in Spokane in April.”

There were 455 students competing from 18 chapters from the Puget Sound Region.

The results are:

• Social Media Campaign: Briana Yacklin, sixth place; Meiqi Liang, sixth place.

• Public Speaking I: Amelie Atwater, fifth place; Areej Al Awadhi, sixth place.

• Business Ethics: Tana Hiigel, second place; Taylor Beebe, second place.

SEATTLE — Several former North Olympic Peninsula students were named to Seattle Pacific University’s 2016 autumn quarter dean’s list.

Students named to the dean’s list have completed a minimum of 12 credits and attained a 3.5 or higher grade-point average.
