NEWS BRIEFS: Gonzaga lists have local residents … and other items

SPOKANE — Five Clallam County residents have been named to Gonzaga University’s fall 2018 dean’s and president’s lists.

Anika Van Dyken of Port Angeles was named to the president’s list.

To qualify, a student must achieve a 3.85 to

4.0 grade-point average.

Those named to the dean’s list are Forks resident Scott Archibald and Port Angeles residents Nicholas Fritscher, Emily Menshew and Emily Van Dyken.

To qualify, students must achieve a 3.5 to

3.84 grade-point average.

Unity speaker scheduled for weekend

PORT ANGELES — The Rev. Donna Little’s lesson will be “Living on Purpose: Part 2” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Little will be teaching at Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle Ave.

Sunday service begins at 10 a.m.

Auditions open for OTA musical show

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts has announced that it will hold open auditions for its production of the musical comedy “First Date” from

1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 and and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11.

The auditions will be held in the OTA Gathering Hall, 414 N. Sequim Ave.

Auditioners will be asked to perform 16 bars of a Broadway song that represents the style of the show and their vocal style.

An accompanist will be provided although auditioners may also bring their own.

The director is Christy Holy, Steven Humphrey is the music director.

The play will run Thursdays through Sundays from April 26 to May 12.

Book wars

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Library System will host 7th-grade and 8th-grade teams from area schools for the final competition of Book Wars at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8.

The competition will be held in the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Competitors are students at Sequim Middle School, Stevens Middle School, Crescent School, Olympic Peninsula Academy and Forks Junior High School.

Throughout the school year the students have read a collection of 12 books and then competed in qualifying competitions held at their schools.

The winner of the final competition will win a Samsung Galaxy tablet for each team member.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

Bird watching class

SEQUIM — The Dungeness River Audubon Society will present classes for beginning birders at

1 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Feb. 5 through Feb. 26.

The classes will be held at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

The classes will cover bird identification, types, behavior, adaptation, sounds, field guides, nest boxes and how to use optics.

The cost for the series is $70 per person, $50 for society members.

Seed library opens

PORT HADLOCK — The Washington State University Jefferson County Extension will hold a grand opening seed swap for its Seed Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

The seed swap will be held in the WSU classroom at 97 Oak Bay Road.

According to a press release, the library will loan open-pollinated vegetable, herb and flower seeds to members to plant.

Members are expected to harvest seeds to return to the library.

The library will also sponsor educational programs on harvesting, saving and storing seeds.

The seed library is in the WSU extension office at 121 Oak Bay Road and is open from 9 a.m. to

2 p.m. Monday through Thursday from February through October.

Library membership is free and open to all.

Adult learning

PORT TOWNSEND — Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship recently announced its spring Adult Learning Programs.

The program includes a variety of offerings from one-day field trips to multi-week lecture courses.

Brochures are also available at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., Port Hadlock, at the Port Townsend Library, 1220 Lawrence St. and at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St.
