NEWS BRIEFS: Gifted flag raised at PA middle school … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Stevens Middle School was recently gifted a flag from the Lower Elwha Tribe.

The Port Angeles School District installed a second flag holder on the flagpole in order to accommodate raising the flag.

When a flag is gifted from an Native American Tribe, a protocol must be followed before the flag is hoisted for the first time, Principal Ryan Stevens said in a news release.

A small contingent of the Lower Elwha drum group, Native American students and some Elders assembled in front of the school at the flagpole June 15 to honor the flag as it was raised for the first time.

United States flag protocol allows for flags from states and other sovereign nations to be flown below the U.S. flag, according to a news release.

Grants awarded

PORT TOWNSEND — Rotary Club of East Jefferson County’s Local Grant Committee awarded three grants totaling $2,100 to area organizations and programs.

The Chimacum Backpacks for Kids program was awarded a $600 grant to support its ongoing efforts to provide area school district children

who experience food insecurity with funding for food costs, according to the release.

The Citizens for School Safety (CSS) program was awarded a grant of $1,000 to wrap up efforts for providing 72-hour emergency food kits for Chimacum Middle School.

This program was started with seed money from the Rotary club in the light of school shootings across the nation, according to the release.

The committee is chaired by past Rotary club President Karen Griffith and includes members Stephen Porter, Betsy Pentz and Caleb Summerfelt.
