NEWS BRIEFS: Gardening talk set today in Sequim . . . and other items

SEQUIM — “Gardening with Worm Tea” will be offered at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today.

The free class is open to the public.

Harold and Virginia Vadset produce a soil and foliar feed made from worm castings they have been selling locally and in Seattle for many years.

Find out how the “worm tea” works, as researched by Ohio State University, and how plants can get up to 30 percent more growth, according to a news release.

Poetry reading set Thursday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Leora Gansworth, Peninsula adjunct faculty member, will read from her work at 12:35 p.m. Thursday.

The free Studium Generale reading will be in the Little Theater on Peninsula College campus at 1502 E. Lauridesen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Gansworth is a writer who works in many genres.

Her chapbook, Dark Swimming, was globally released last year in a collection called Effigies II, which was published by Salt Publications of the United Kingdom as part of an effort to elevate the voices of Indigenous women poets.

Her reading will feature new and selected scholarly work and poetry. Gansworth is a citizen of Anishinaabe nation, Kitigan Zibi, located near what is now referred to as Western Quebec.

Her maternal ancestors founded that community.

Gansworth grew up among her father’s nation, on the lands of the Haudenosaunee (People of the Long House) who are known for contributions to democracy, sports and other aspects of life.

Coffee with mayor

SEQUIM — The city of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues at the Highway 101 Diner, 392 W. Washington St., at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Sequim residents can meet informally with Sequim Mayor Dennis Smith, who will listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Dean’s list

SEATTLE — The following students made the Seattle Pacific University 2015 autumn quarter dean’s list.

Students on the dean’s list have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.50 or higher grade-point average.

Student graduates

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Lily Hans of Port Townsend graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall 2015 semester with a Bachelor of Science in environmental sustainability, health and safety.

The private institute, founded in 1829, enrolls 18,600 students in more than 200 career-oriented and professional programs.

University honors

SPOKANE — Tyler Burke, Gabriel Carter and Clara Nelson, all of Port Angeles, have been named to the Whitworth University provost’s honor roll for fall semester 2015.

The students qualified for the academic honor society by maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.75 during the semester.

Nelson also was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

PC open house

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will host an open house this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Visitors are invited to stop by Room E-148 at Maier Hall, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., for information and refreshments.

The college will expand on the High School 21+ high school diploma program, which offers adults the chance to earn their high school diploma in as little as 10 weeks, according to a news release.

The cost for the program is $25 per quarter, with scholarships available.

Hiring event set for PA on March 23

PORT ANGELES — A Clallam County Hiring & Resource Event will take place at the Vern Burton Memorial Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 23.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Nonprofit to move

PORT ANGELES — Around Again, a nonprofit used building supplies and home furnishing store, is moving its Port Angeles location to a larger store at 3368 U.S. Highway 101.

This new location is across from Walmart.

Around Again’s last day of business at its current location, 2604 W. 18th St., will be Friday, March 25.

It will open at its new location at 10 a.m. Friday, April 1.

The business also is located at 22 Gilbert Road in Sequim.
