NEWS BRIEFS: Garbage service change-fee waived for two-week period in Port Angeles … and other items

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles residential garbage customers will have a two-week period to change their garbage service without incurring the usual $30 service fee.

Between this coming Monday and Nov. 18, garbage customers can choose either weekly service for $38.70 per month or every-other-week garbage collection for $24.16 per month. Yard waste service is optional and is $8.85 per month.

The new rates will take effect Jan. 1.

All change request forms must be received by Friday, Nov. 18.

A change form is available at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St., and on the city website at www.cityofpa.us.

Only customers requesting changes to their service need to return the forms to the front counter in City Hall.

Forms also can be deposited in the drop box outside City Hall or mailed to City Hall at 321 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Studded tires

OLYMPIA — Studded tires are now in season.

Drivers could put on their studded tires as of Tuesday. They can remain on cars through March 31.

Motorists purchasing studded tires this year will notice a new $5-per-tire fee enacted by the state Legislature on all new studded tire purchases.

Money collected goes to the state motor vehicle fund for roadway work.

Some vehicle manufacturers recommend against the use of tire chains for certain vehicle models.

The State Patrol provides a list of approved, alternative-traction devices that are acceptable when chains or traction tires are required.
