NEWS BRIEFS: Fuel removed from sunken boat in PA … and other items

PORT ANGELES — All fuel has been removed from a sailboat that sank in Port Angeles Boat Haven, the state Department of Ecology said in a tweet Thursday.

The cause of the sinking of the 50-foot sailboat, the Fram, on Tuesday night has not been determined.

A salvage plan is still being decided, Ecology said.

Ron Holcomb, a hazardous material specialist with Ecology, said 275 gallons or more of diesel fuel had been aboard.

The Port of Port Angeles contained the leakage with a floating boom.

The owner of the vessel, identified by the port as Timothy O’Brien, refused to comment about the incident.

Market canceled

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Farmers Market has been canceled for a second week because of bad weather.

The market at The Gateway transit center at Lincoln and Front streets was closed last Saturday as well.

It is planned to be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

Dinner postponed

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Senior Center has postponed its third annual spaghetti

dinner fundraiser from Saturday, Feb. 23, to March 23.

“We’re having to cancel because of all the snow we’ve been getting,” said Janice Etherton of the center’s board of directors Wednesday.

“Some of our members live higher on the mountains and they have three or four feet of snow.”

This year, proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Peninsula Home Fund.

Advance tickets are available at the center at 328 E. Seventh St., for $18. Tickets at the door will be $20. Wine is included with the meal.

The dinner will have two seatings: at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Unity speaker is scheduled

PORT ANGELES — The Rev. Patricia Coughlin Mawson’s lesson will be “I Am Determined to See Things Differently” on Sunday.

Mawson will teach at Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle Ave.

Sunday service begins at 10 a.m.

Child care is available.

Service canceled

SEQUIM — The Taize service scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25, has been canceled due to the snow and icy conditions.

The ecumenical services, held the fourth Monday of each month at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth St., will resume in March.

Church makes cash donation

PORT ANGELES — The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Port Angeles recently made a cash donation to the Chief Petty Officers Association.

According to a press release, the church wanted to take action that would improve the lives of Coast Guardsmen and their families who were most affected by the recent government shutdown.

The church board approved a donation of $2,500 to purchase generic $25 gift cards for distribution to 100 enlisted guardsmen.

A special offering at the church raised that total to $2,850.

Pastor David Moffitt presented checks to the association Feb. 5 at the Port Angeles Air Station on Ediz Hook.
