QUILCENE — A free walking tour of the Tarboo Wildlife preserve, 2151 Dabob Road, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12.
As there is little parking at the preserve, participants are asked to arrive at the Park and Ride at Safeway, 442 W. Sims Way, Port Townsend, at 9:30 a.m. or at the Park and Ride at Center Road and state Highway 104 at 10 a.m.
Attendees should bring a picnic lunch and drinks, plus rain gear and boots for light walking.
There are two rest-stop opportunities.
Peter Bahls, conservation biologist and director of Northwest Watershed Institute, guides this three-hour tour of several sites.
First is the 316-acre Tarboo Wildlife Preserve, notable for its numerous standing dead trees, installed to provide habitat for more than 200 species that use such snags for feeding, roosting or nesting.
The group will also visit the 236-acre Tarboo Forest, working forestland with seven Tarboo Creek tributaries.
The tour concludes on protected shoreline that benefits from the restoration and conservation work upstream.

Scholarship given
PORT ANGELES — Keith Halsey, a Port Angeles High School graduate, has been awarded the Darlene Marihugh Memorial Scholarship for 2014.
Halsey will receive a $2,000 scholarship to further his education.
He plans to attend Lineman College in Meridian, Idaho. His future plan is to become a journeyman lineman.
Halsey is the son of Jeff and Fawn Halsey of Port Angeles.
Pajama math
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., will host children’s “Pajama Math” storytimes Thursdays from July 10-31 at 6:30 p.m.
Offered as part of the library’s 2014 summer reading program, “Fizz, Boom, Read!,” Pajama Math storytimes focus on developing math and social skills, organized around math activities and math-themed books, songs and games.
