PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Fire Department is giving free smoke/carbon monoxide detector alarms to people in the community unable to afford one.
The department will deliver and install the alarm as well as provide safety tips to prevent fire-causing accidents.
The department reported that 1.34 million fires were reported nationally in 2015, resulting in 3,280 civilian deaths and 15,700 injuries — of which 82 percent were residential fire fatalities and injuries.
Detectors can reduce or eliminate these risks, the department said.

Sequim closure
SEQUIM — The city of Sequim’s finance counter will be closed Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for staff training.
The finance counter, located in the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St., will be open for regular business Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Former Olympic Peninsula students named to WSU fall 2016 honor roll
PULLMAN — Several former Olympic Peninsula students were named to Washington State University’s fall 2016 president’s honor roll.
To qualify for the president’s list, undergraduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of
nine graded hours in a
single term at WSU and earn a grade-point average of 3.75 or earn a 3.5 cumulative GPA based on 15 cumulative hours of graded work.

Friends of the NRA to hold dinner, auction March 11
PORT ANGELES — The Northwest Peninsula Friends of the National Rifle Association (NRA) will hold its annual dinner and auction Saturday,
March 11, at 5:30 p.m. at the Vern Burton Community Center.
Attendees can participate in games, raffles, a silent auction, a live auction of firearms and other collectible items at the center, 308 E. Fourth St.
Dinner tickets are $40 per person and are available online at www.friendsofnra.org or at the door.
Proceeds from the auction go to the NRA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that is separate from the NRA.
Grants made by the foundation benefit shooting sports in Washington state such as shooting range improvements, firearms and equipment for 4-H and school shooting teams.
